cover for winter

Post by GustheUsher on 9/9/2010, 3:40 am

Hello all, I am considering putting a cover on my new unit for the winter. I am not sure if that is a good idea or not, for the price will it give me any bennift. We live in Ontario Canada, we do not get a large amount of snow here, last year we had about 5 inches that stayed.

I have the metal carport that has been worth every penny. I'm not a fan of the canvas covers. I paid a little over 2,000 for my cover and its wide enough to let the slides out and walk around it and tall enough to still get on top of the roof and be able to wash it.

Theres a few that leave theirs out all year and have had no problems with snow.

Does it make much of a difference from gelcoat fade or a good coat of wax? I'm looking for opinions or options form folks who use them.

The covers I've seen advertised says they're UV resisitent. But does that mean for the RV or the cover? scratch

This will be my first year not having a roof over the Cat while in hibernation. I'm banking on nothing bad happening from setting uncovered all winter. Will know more in April.

Our 29RLBS has spent 4 New Hampshire winters without a cover and is no worse for wear. We don't get enough sun to bother the tires (many, many gray days) so I don't over them either.

Just a good washing in the spring (roof, walls & awning) and she's set to go.

peelout Outta here!

We have used a cover in Alabama for the past 2 years. We do not strap it down very tightly since abrasion from a tightly strapped cover supposedly can damage the roof membrane. I feel like it has been effective in keeping the exterior dry, shielded from UV and much cleaner. Its a pain to put on and take off and I would not want to do that every week or so. However, if putting it on in the fall and removing it in the spring, it's not so bad. The cover itself, after 2 winters appears to be as good as new. We got the Tyvek based one and it was a little less than $300.

I've been using an ADCO for 6 years and it has worked great.
I find that after the TT has sat all winter (8+ mos), the trailer is as clean and fresh as the day I covered it. I too suggest getting one with the Tyvek top though because without it, rain can get through to the roof. I dont have the Tyvek and have to first cover the TT roof with a tarp.

My decals did the same thing and our Cat was stored inside my barn while not in use. I did buy it slightly used, so I do not know how the original owners stored it.

WOW that looks bad.... SORRY!!!! And I see you got no where with FR. One would think they would at least meet you in the middle. Wonder if it would be worth calling the parts guy,
(Kyle for Wildcat parts.... 574-206-7600) and seeing how much the decals would be.

I just check with Beverly (warranty) in Oregon. She said the decals for my trailer are no longer available. Mine are doing okay after 5 season, but I can see signs of blistering and pealing of some of them. She said to trim the excess to help stop the pealing. Once the warranty is up, she/FR doesn't seem to be very helpful.

I will not be putting a cover over my cat, because I am going out for at least 15 more nights before the end of the year. 2 of those are for new year. 30/31 December. I do hope its not too cold

Re: cover for winter

Post by Flyer on 9/14/2010, 3:14 pm

bighornram........

I have the same exact thing happening to my front decal as well. I am thinking that if FR doesnt have any more decals that I may just remove the decal on the front and go without. I know it will look naked, but I still plan on putting on decals from this site on the front and that will be the only thing.

As far as covering my 5er, I have always covered my units, and with 'Cat, we bought an ADCO cover the first year and cover ever year. My thoughts on covering are, with the snow we get, I dont water sitting on top of the unit those days the snow melts. It keeps the roof clean, helps the whole unit stay clean all winter and just me piece of mind. If we get a big snow, I take and clean off as much snow as I can with out scraping the cover. Yes, its a hassle installing and removing the cover, but its worth it.

Thanks All

I bought a cover for my past 5th wheel and It didn't even last the winter. It just ripped to nothing. I was so ******************* mad I'll never buy another. I bought the best camping world had and it wasn't cheap. Just threw my money in the wind is all I did.
