Re: emissions
Welcome to the forum. Not sure where your from, but I would run it down to a local Autozone or Advanced Auto they will read any trouble codes for free, easiest way to find out what may be going on.
Good Luck and Let us know how you make out, many of us run Fords.

Re: emissions
You can head over to the Ford Truck Enthusiast site, and put your question there too. You will get many responses, and hopefully the right answer. Rich has a good start for you as well.

Re: emissions
Every once in a while I get a check engine light on and a code. Nothing wrong with the truck I guess Ford needs money. One thing I have done to help prevent the turbo clean, to help stop the code, is I put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in every 3rd or 4th tank. I also put one in at the beginning of a trip.

In my F350 6L PS SD the EGR was the problem so I just unplug it. I don't know what it would do with gasser . IT make the a world of good for the diesel . Yes it will give a code but no check lights

Kind of curious how you unpluged the EGR? I guess what I am asking is was there a vacuum line to plug and how did you plug it?

NO vacuum line all electrical . on my 05 PS it up front top . IT between the oil filter & alternator. IT has a 1" socket electrical on top. I unplug it with the motor off, to leave it closed. EGR would open or stick open & my turbo boost would drop for 30 to 15. IT hasn't happen again in two years.

Re: emissions
Thank you may have to give it a try soon. I think 2004 is in the back. Hunting for EGR time. See if it runs better or worse.

My son-in-law has a 04. Not 100% I think it up front too. you have to get right over it to see it. OR try google the 04 they may have some picture to point it out better. They all so have a web page on how to clean it or change it out. Good luck

Re: emissions
I have found it and it is now unplugged. Now to see if HP and mileage increase. So thanks to smog requirements in CA I can not remove it but at least we can run without it for a while. Probably will have to smog the truck in 2012. Will be interesting to see if the dumb thing works when I plug it back in. I hate to replace the EGR cooler yet. I just had Ford changed the coolant. Hope it hangs on for a while. Thank you all for the info. I am also looking into doing a CCV mod in the near future. There are two ways to do it. One is legal (?) and one is down right illegal.

Re: emissions
Had a problem with a check engine light. I found this interesting post that effects all California Diesels.
The SES light should only come on with the CA emissions equipped vehicles. The way some get around this is to hook up another EGR valve, big$. You can get a failed one from the dealer if you know a tech. Install the failed one on the engine, (make sure its failed closed) hook up your good EGR to the connector, no codes, no lights. Theres another reason for going this route. The EGR works in conjunction with the VGT actuator, with the EGR disconnected people have reported about a 1 psi loss of boost at WOT. When the ECM detects the EGR is not functioning properly (it does have a feedback loop) it must go into some sort of limp mode, limiting boost at WOT. Ive heard a couple of people report this, they have decided to just hook it back up.
As far as the VW TDI. My son and I cleaned his Golf TDI intake a few months back. The intake where the EGR gasses enter is about 2.5", it was so coked up there was about a 3/4" hole remaining! I couldn't believe it was still running let alone getting 45mpg. It had 80K miles on it at the time.

Re: emissions
Sorry you have to deal with CA emission. I think I'll leave mine unplug. When that EGR stock open I when form 30 to 10/15 boost pulling in the mountain about 8000'. I first though my turbo went home & left me behind. I let WOT have that 1 psi. I think I still am coming out ahead 15-20 psi by keeping that junk closed.
