Dodge Ram Code P0191

Post by schrowang on 8/31/2010, 2:58 pm

For those of us with 2003 to 2005 Ram CTD's there is a TSB out to resolve a minor problem with the way the fuel rail pressure sensor circuit reacts to a computer glitch. Basically this sensor does a rationality check which tells the computer whether the pressure in the fuel rail is right. Unfortunately leaving the key on too long before actually starting can lead to a false positive and the computer will throw a P0191 code. Sometimes the CEL will light and sometimes not. I caught mine because I do the fast key on/off three times about once a month to check if there are any codes in the system. I caught the P0191 code this way.

I took it to the dealer in Marion, NC (Stamey Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep) and had them reflash the ECM. They cleared the code and no more trouble.

The TSB for out model years is TSB 18-022-07

There are other TSB's for other model years (2006 & 2007) that apply to the same problem.

Mike, i have a code reader, i have never had a reason to hook it to the Ram. If it does come up with that code just clear it?

From the research I've done on three CTD forums, the P0191 code shows up due to the rationality glitch more than any other reason. That's why the reflash of the ECM was developed by Dodge.

When I got the code, I did not get a Check Engine Light (CEL) along with it. This is also a common failing. I was just doing my monthly "3 quick turns of the key on/off/on/off/on/off" and the code turned up on the odometer. It wasn't there a month ago. I took it to the local dealer and spent the $32.00 to have the ECM reflashed according to the TSB.
