Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
Hello,
Has anybody attempted to convert their electic landing gear to the optional hydraulic system? I have a 28RKSB cat and really would like a speedier landing gear, the electric ones seem to crawl.
Thanks,
F1

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
I'm sure it can be done. The guys @ Trailair (part of Lippert) could probably retro fit it for you. Best option I bought besides the 16" tires when I ordered mine. I'll never go electric again!!!!
I also have the rare 28RKSB floor plan. Check out my mods posted on here.

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
Thanks for the quick reply. I figure somebody has done it or found out it was not cost effective. The next rig I get I'll order, this one was a hold over from 2009 that I bought new 4 months ago, so the price was right! BTW, great user name, I've been know as Mopar Joe for about 30 years now!

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
I inquired about this with Lippert about 4 years ago. I wasn't worth it. I should have paid the $150 upgrade. It was a $1800-$2500 to change it out and they wanted the work done at one of their service centers. They wouldn't sell the conversion kit on the street unless you signed away the warranty on the slides hydraulics too.
They mentioned a electric motor upgrade that could be done to speed it up, but it required a gear box upgrade too.

The electric motor was Tuson ELG.

Thanks Jetskier,
I kind of figured it was going to be way too much. I'll investigate the quicker electric motor as an option.
Thanks again!

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
Lippert faster electric landing gear motor kit. They state it's 3 times faster than the standard motor. Hyd is 10 times faster than standard electric. You can buy the kit here http://store.lci1.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=lci&StoreType=BtoC&Count1=107937037&Count2=25077462 the link won't take you directly to the item for some reason. Click on Lippert Component's, Stabilizing jacks and leveling, than Jack and landing gear motors.

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
Hmmm, let's see ....... got the regular speed landing gear motor, came standard on the Cat, didn't cost be any extra, works fine.
vs.
$299.00 for a motor that's 3X as fast as the motor I've got, or $1.8 to $2.5K for a hydraulic conversion ......
Don't think so. Besides, us retired folk have all the time in the world, right.

Sorry guys, I'm not picking a fight, or making fun of or flaming anybody. Just seems like alot of $N,NNN.nn to save about 3 minutes.

Hehe, I agree, I was just going down the road with this because I really like to tinker, alter, upgrade, make better, make worse and waste my time on most things I own, so I figured why not the new trailer too?
I actually will put the money into better suspension for the trailer, and possibly air suspension for the truck instead, but who knows maybe I'll throw 24 volts at the motor and see how fast it can reallygo!!
JK, no use deliberately breaking something, things break by themselves fast enough.
Thanks for all the comments!

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
If I have to replace the motor or gear box, I'd probably just upgrade to this faster motor. At this point, it's not going to be a planned upgrade for me.

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
That's why we buy these cheap Wildcats, so we can use the money we saved to mod them, upgrade them and etc. At least that why I did. I was going to buy a 50 or 60K trailer and I was like why, when I'll have to spend more to make it into what I want.

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
I'm with Earl. I feel that the hydraulic landing gear is one of the best options on the Cat. Would never pay $ 1,800.00 but would absolutely upgrade for a few hundred. After having the hydraulic I would find it hard to go back to electric.

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
My dealer ordered HYD LGs for mine. When we got it we thought this was great. They were an accident waiting to happen. A safety hazard waiting to put some one in the hospital. Everybody including the factory was involved it trying to fix the wicked kitties HYD LG. Finally had them rip it out, trash it, and install electric with 2 buttons. Never go back to HYD LG. Waste of money. Can spend it on other needed options. I should have got 50amp service instead.

Re: Convert Electric landing gear to Hydraulic
When you say "accident waiting to happen" was it because of what I would imagine air in the hydraulics making it spongey?

I do not know if I would call it spongy but look out. Facing the trailer. When you raised the trailer all worked well. Wait a few minutes then try to lower it. The right side would drop about 2 inches when you hit the button. Make sure you are not standing under the trailer. Headache happens.
