Diesel Fuel Additives

Post by mattebury on 8/27/2010, 8:38 am

OK oil burners, what if any fuel additives do you use, why and what benefits do you see?

I just bought an 80oz bottle of Diesel Kleen and I'm gonna run it through the next seven tanks to see what I see. Supposedly it gives more hp (because of cetane increase), better fuel mileage (lord knows I need it on the 6.4).

I have used Diesel Kleen since I bought my truck new. Any difference??? Do not have any idea!
I get a little over 12 mph pulling the camper. Been tracking it since we left Florida. I am now setting in Dodge City, KS on the way to Washington St.
Got the same thing 2 yrs ago when we went to Alaska.

I don't use them often, but I remember my truck ran better when I dumped whole bottle in the tank. It was meant for at least two tanks.

On another front, I just saw this new clip of some new fuel process called GDiesel. It's produced locally here that supposed to run cleaner and net better efficiency.

Not sure if there claims are true, but I haven't found a retailer yet that carries it to run some tests.

I'd want to see some independent testing myself.

I'm going to email the sales dude and see if they know of any stations around here selling it.

By Ford Tech has told me to use the Ford Cetane Additive after I had the EGR Valve to plug-up. Ford replaced the EGR Valve and recommended for me to add 2 oz. of the Cetane Additive at each fill-up. Have not had any problems so far. peelout

I haven't run it regularly either, but use DieselKleen when I remember. I haven't noticed any real difference yet, but I can't say I've used it often enough to make any real comments.

I buy mine at WallyMart. Silver Diesel Clean in the summer and White bottle Diesel Clean in the winter. White bottle has anti-jelling additive which is required for NH winters. And, I don't care what the fuel companies tell us about winter fuel not jelling. Mine did in -20*F and never, never again.

I do the same as Mike, Walmart, Silver Diesel Clean in the summer and White bottle Diesel Clean in the winter.

I can't really say I see a difference, but I've had no problems....

I also run Diesel Clean both types depending on the season. Tried Monster Diesel but did not really notice a difference to the much cheaper diesel clean.

Sister is service manager at local ford dealer she advised me to run an additive especially pulling an RV, as the new lower sulfur fuel does not have good lubrication properties, the additive provides the lubrication.

The only time I used an additive is when we had a ranch in Oregon, when the temperatures went below freezing to keep the fuel from gelling. Here in Norcal. we do not see freezing temperatures, so I stopped using it. It would be nice to see an actual test to see if it really works to help lubricate the engine or not. Maybe it is great for the engine, or maybe it is snake oil.

On the Cummins engine, the injectors are lubricated by the fuel, as is the fuel pump (either the up front puller or the in-tank pusher). The better the lubricity of the fuel, the better those are going to operate and hopefully have their life extended.

Right after ULSD was introduced I read an article in the TDR magazine about the lowered lubricity of the new fuel and its effect on the moving parts of the fuel system in the CTD. Basically the lowered lubricating power of ULSD is robbing us of performance and parts life. The manufacturers may tell us different, but I'll go with info from TDR anytime.

I use the additive for increased lubricity as well as the anti-jelling in the winter.

BTW, just passed 114,000 miles and still going strong.
