What type of jack?

Post by BobnPi on 8/23/2010, 6:37 am

I was just wondering what you all use in case of a flat/blowout. I plan on purchasing a hydrolic jack, but wondered if there was anything in particular I should consider before doing so.

I carry a 12 ton bottle jack. They are dangerous cause they can slip out and the axle can fall off.

Actually, my jack is currently holding my axle up cause I'm repainting my rusty wheels....

I use my stackable leveling blocks when changeing tires on the road. I have a bottle jack for back up.
When servicing the trailer I hook to the truck and use a 12 ton bottle jack just behind the back spring mount and jack up both wheels on one side at the time. Then I place Jack Stands on both axles at ubolts for safety back up.

Get you some boards or the leveling blocks. And practice lifting a tire off the ground before you hit the road. Just for safety reason's not having to crawl under the camper or leave your feet pointed out toward the road or having a big rig blow by and knock the camper off the hyd jack. I like the boards/blocks. You can change a flat in minutes with the boards/blocks.... And when your on the side of the road, the quicker the better. Sometimes if you lose the center cap of the tire,,,, you may have to use your spare to roll the flat up on to loosen the lug nuts or wood blocks will work to.

I don't even carry a jack or jack stands....

But I do carry one of these. http://www.hitchesonline.com/jiffyjack/jiffy.htm

Much quicker and safer than a jack.

Do you have the Equa-Flex system installed?

I'm not sure Tom. To be honest, I've never even looked.
I'll have to read up on it to see what it is and then take a look at ours. Wink

I've had the ramp for years. Its raised all my trailers off the ground. I've used it on both our tandem axle equipment trailers, our old 5er, my dads travel trailer and tried it on the new Cat before loading it. There are three different sizes of the Jiffy Jack and you can also lay it on a board if you need even more lift. I've never needed any boards on any of our trailers.

If you look in between your tires, you will see something that looks like this:

http://www.trailair.com/products/equaflex/

The reason I'm asking is cause lots of us have this Equa-Flex and we cant get 1 tire off the ground using one of these lifts. The suspension moves too much for the flat to get off the ground and for you to get a pumped up tire on.

I took a look and I have something that looks nearly identical but its not brass or gold color. Its black and says EQ-???? something on it. It was near dark when I looked.

I'll snap a pic when I get the chance so we can compare the two.

Tom, Thanks for asking this question. I also wonder about the spacing between the tires. I have the 16" tires and there is only about 1.5"-2" between the tires. I guess my question would be, is the angle of the ramp steep enough to lift tires that are so close together?
