Size of camp ground

Post by Sean on 8/18/2010, 11:08 pm

Here in the U.K there are supposed to be laws that determine the distance between outfits on a campground. 20'between side walls of units. The average size of pitch over here is around 50 to 100 square meters, which is not always the right shape to park if your unit is long. What sort of size are pitches in the U.S

Sean, I think there are not really any laws unless local. Some campgrounds like Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone, you need to watch that your slides don't hit the neighbors trailer. Well, not all of them like that. Other campgrounds have 40 foot wide sites. Some much bigger. There is a state park here in WI that we visit annually. Most the sites here are 50-60 feet deep and at least that wide. These here are wooded and you can hardly see your neighbor at some.

No laws governing the size of campground sites in the US that I'm aware of.

Sites vary widely from campground to campground and even within the same campground. If I visit a campground and all sites are right on top of each other; I politely let the owner/manager know why I will not be returning.

Sean,

The RV industry has literally outgrown many of the campgrounds in the United States. Many of our CGs were constructed in the 70's and early 80's when RVing and camping became very popular. The average size of a trailer was 7' wide and maybe 24' long. There were some larger, but not many. There were very few 5th wheels and Class C's were the norm for a motor home.

So here are these CG's constructed two and three decades ago, with a huge embedded base (sewers, water, electrical system) and smaller sites. Fast forward to the 90's and 20's and what have you got. 48' X 8' motor homes built on bus chassis with 3' deep slides on each side; 30' to 40' 5th wheels with 3' deep slides on each side, and a deep desire for space on the part of all comers. What is a CG owner to do. Given the recessions that have hit us over those decades, it's no wonder that new CG's are not being built and older CG's are not being modernized.

I know for a fact that the owners of the CG that the DW and I work at were going to develop 10 acres of adjascent riverfront land into premium RV sites (long and wide, pull-thru concrete pads, 100A service, etc.) They went so far as to have the corporate architects draw up some concepts for the installation. BUT ...... come the recession when the real estate bubble burst and the plans were shelved. There went 24 really nice sites.

That is the reality of owning a CG in the US today. So they do the best that they can with what they have and hope for the future. Many of them are just hanging on.

St. Peters Missouri is suppose to open a new campground in the Spring of 2011. It is called Lakeside 370 and will have 50 sites, hiking trails, and a lake. Can't wait to see it!!
cheers

I had read in the newpaper last year about a campground planned by St. Peters and then couldn't find anymore info about it. I took it for granted that the plan had been scrapped. If and when it opens it will really hurt the overpriced Sundermier RV park.

No laws in this country about the size of RV sites. Here's a photo of a number of sites in a very small area. There are seven sites in this one photo and no, this isn't a group site.

Some sites require some real skill to avoid hitting trees.

Here's a link to a post I made on another board about RV Sites.

Richard,
That second picture - the tight squeeze - reminded me of a site we had years ago. We couldn't get into Ludington SP (Michigan), but found a private campground nearby. We had to back into a spot like that with trees all along both sides. Fortunately, back then, we had a smaller trailer. Wish I had taken a pic.

I agree wholeheartedly. Sundermier doesn't offer much for the price that you pay. A good CG in the area would be a welcome addition.

Over here in the U.K. there are private, club, and company owned sites, all have different ways to charge (outfit, +per person + awning + dog + tent + extra car + service pitch + electric). But the cost can be high for a low quality pitch, so we have to be careful. Just Paid £175.00 ($278) for 5 nights for 4 adults and dog + service pitch + electric 16 amp @240 AC +1 extra car. Pitch size was good at 45ft x 25ft. and camp site was well looked after with every thing we needed.
