axles backing up
Have a question have a new 5er been out a few trips, everything is great. I have noticed when i back up to pull in my driveway. When i cut the turn very tight i notice the inside of the turn tires one looks like it bows out and the other bows in greatly. Should the dual axles not budge. Any idea what the problem could be. The tires dont woblle on the road so they are not loose. Or is this normal to happen. Any help would be great. I just dont want to snap a axle.

Re: axles backing up
The axes are fixed to the chassis by means of spring hangers and a central compensator, this allows movement up and down. The tyres are flexible so the side walls will flex when turning tight corners backwards or forwards. I too have to make a tight turn onto my driveway and I sometimes think that I am going to pop the tyres off the rims

Re: axles backing up
It will sure look questionable... but I'll second that... it is normal.

Normal and I think it explains the odd way our wheels seat on little raised portions of metal on the brake drums instead of flat against the drums like cars do (did). I think it allows them to flex somewhat.

Well I'm glad to read this thread. I too have to turn my wheels very tight and up a small incline to get in my driveway. Those tires look as though they will explode from the twisting. I never push them too far and will pull forward to get things straightened out before proceeding straight back once I get around the turn. Just doesn't "look " normal.

Re: axles backing up
The first time I noticed this twisting of the tires was on a fueling stop on our first big trip. At first I did not realize what was going on and thought there was a major problem with the axles! It finally dawned on me what was up after pulling away from the pumps and getting straight and the problem had disappeared.

Re: axles backing up
While the twisting can be considered "normal", I'm not sure it's a good idea. I've done my share of spinning the 5th wheel over the axles while turning. But then I've also replaced all the tires because the sidewalls developed bulges and replaced the shackles twice.

Re: axles backing up
It's not desirable but quite normal. Because neither axle is a steering axle they tend to fight a turn (imagine 2 in-line tires twisting around a tight corner when neither can steer). IMO this is what contributes to trailer wheel bearings never lasting as long as a car or truck wheel bearings. I think this punishment is a major contributing factor to several problems beyond just tire twisting.
But we have to live with it; I will never go to a single axle to cure it. I have nightmares (lol) thinking about a tire blowout on a single axle trailer!!!

They can bulge and you can have the rim come off the bead. I had mine turned to tight and now I have a couple of new floor squeaks in the rear. Anyway one way to help that is put wet bolts on. I have notice a differences since my springs now float. None of that snap, crackle, and pop when I turn mine now. She now floats over speed bumps with out all the noise. She sways a little more but well worth it.
