MAXXIS Tires

Post by oldelmer1 on 8/10/2010, 8:35 am

Of those of you that have changed out to the MAXXIS 15 inch tires, did you keep your stock rims, and what pressure do you run in them?

I've heard folks say their rims can handle 75 or 80 psi, but I cant find the stamp on my rims.

Its time for new tires, was thinking about going with 16 inch tires and rims, but I really don't want to have 5 - 15 inch rims and tires laying around the garage.

Tom,

I've used Maxxis tires for years on my dirt bikes and atv's. I feel safe in saying they make a quality product. You cant buy much better tires in the offroad world.

The only stamps I've seen on wheels have always been on the inside of the wheel.

I'll be changing mine out as well in a year or so but I've totally convinced myself into stepping up to 16" wheels and LT "E" rated tires.

Tom

Before I traded my Wildcat I switched to Maxxis tires because of all the tire problems I had in the past. My stock rims were stamped #80 (on the back side) so that is what I ran in them. We took a trip from North Georgia to Colorado Springs, Co and it pulled great. I was thinking of switching to 16" rims but the clearance on the hyd rods on the large slide was to close for comfort for me. Just my 2 cents worth. Happy travels. Jim

The stock steel rims can hold a max of 65 PSI (at least the rims on my rig ) . The older rims are not necessarily stamped with max PSI figures, mine aren't, but I believe that they are stamped on the newer ones. My stock rims are stamped JJ and I had to go to the manufacturer website to find the PSI ratings when I replaced my D tires with E rated tires two-years ago.

Educate me!! Call me a dumby, like my DW does sometimes , but I changed tires last year near the end of camping season. I went with Maxxis 15" E rated tires. The tire pressure for the tires are 80 lbs of course, but I never considered the steel wheel rating. I have put roughly 2000 miles on them so far. Should I look some where on the wheel for the rating? The front doesn't have anything on them. Maybe I should look on the backside? I haven't had a problem, and the "E" rated tire has really made a difference on towing the WC. The tires are also wearing great.

My spare is a steel rim and is marked (stamped) 75 on the inside near the bead. My aluminum rims do not appear to be marked, but am assuming they are 65-70.

This has me curious now. My wildcat came with the 16" 235/80/16 load range E tires from the factory. I have aluminum wheels and a steel spare. I will have to check and see what the steel spare is stamped as all these tires are 80 psi.

You could probably sell those 15" wheels on Craig's list or something. I actually am in the market for 3 15" for one of our small lawn care trailers. I know I would buy used ones if they would be available somewhere close.
After post here and on other forums, I am pretty sure I will get Michelin tires next on our Cat. Or maybe Goodyear. I don't remember what models everyone is bragging about. We replaced them last year with cheap Towmasters and have been fine so far. I did change to E tires. The old ones were D and as I have this thing loaded maybe a little heavy, I feel better with E tires. One of the old tires blew up last year. I would rather not go through that again

The tyres on my Cat are made by Duro ST225/75R16 load range D and they state max 65 psi cold. Also the sticker on the Cat 65 psi for the tyres of this size. I check my tyres every trip and they seem to be standing up to the job quite well.

If the rim is not strong enough to hold the pressure, the rim could fail in numerous ways, fracture along a weld line or they could deform and not hold pressure due to the bead not being able to withstand the pressure.

While in the short term, they will hold the air just fine I'm sure, it's in the long term that you will see the effects.

Well, I guess I'm going to find out. Ordered Greenball Towmaster ST225 75 R 15 LRE tires yesterday from Costco. I'm planning on mounting them on the OEM 15 inch rims. But I will have the metal valve stems installed this time.

Reason I went with the 15's is cause my springs are not flipped because of my 4X2 truck. I don't have a lot of clearance underneath where the bar goes across for the super slide.

Tom, you should at least change out the stems with all the problems out there but there are issuse with rims as well they maybe only rated at 65psi.

Jameseh, yes, absolutely metal valve stems are the only way to go.

I have read on RV.NET that lots of folks have done this with no problems, so we shall see.

Just a sour, I mean side note. I put 4 new Greenball Tow Master ST225/75R15E on my cat last January. Now have about 5 - 6000 miles max. Have lost 2 of them. One separation and one blowout. I don't suspect the rim PSI, just poor quality. Sorry, just my 2 cents.

I looked at a set of Greenball tires (don't remember which one) at Discount Tire. It was a one ply sidewall. I just couldn't bring myself to accept them and went to Big O for a set of tires. These tires were on my Jayco which my BIL bought, and they are still going strong.

I sure like our 16 inch load range E tires. No problems, great wear, and smooth ride.
