1 piece Drive Shaft

Post by ScottandGrace on 8/6/2010, 3:34 pm

Hey folks, I just thought I'd tell you about the great results I had with a recent repair.
My truck had developed a nasty shutter at launch and even though I replaced all my u-joints (1 was dry), it made no difference. I was told the carrier bearing that supports the center of the DS was bad (rubber was soft).
So, I could either spend more money and time on it or go to a 1 piece DS like the new Dodges have and forever rid myself of all the issues that come with a 2 piece.
I installed the new 1 pc aluminum shaft and it made a huge difference. It weighs nearly half as much as the old one and has larger u-joints. It's dead smooth now at any speed, has zero shutter and it even shifts better than it did when new ~ it always shifted with a clunkiness that was attributed by everyone to the ''big manual trans".
If you need a carrier bearing or even just u-joints, you owe it to yourself to check this mod out no matter what brand truck you have.

Sweet! How did your other mods work out? The steering stabilizer and I think shocks once you got back to towing?

All trucks have and will use 2-pc shafts, yes, even Fords. My 93 Dodge is 2pc and never had any issues. Still running the factory u-joints and carrier bearings assy with over 300K on it.

Wow Earl, you've been really lucky. My 93 Dodge needed to get the carrier shimmed to get rid of shutter when it was new and the first joint went out at about 20k (warranty repair). I ended up replacing all of them at 60K since the stockers all dried up again (no zerks).
With the success of the new all aluminum 1 pcs in both aftermarket and DC applications, I suspect we'll see a lot more of them on all trucks.
The steering brace took out a lot of the wander I had when towing and while the orig shocks were still fine, the new shocks really reduced the harshness of the ride and soak up bumps alot better. They also greatly reduced porpoising with the TT ~ something I found that a set of Rancho's had no effect on. However, I don't think they'd be any good for serious off roading but the worst my truck see's is the occasional dirt road so that doesn't matter to me.

BTW, my 93 Dodge Club Cab had the best seats I've ever had. Does yours have the high-back buckets? I sure wish this truck had them.

Scott
Yeah my 93 has been a great truck. It's mostly untouched. Had a rear main seal replaced under warranty back in the day. I just replaced the factory starter last year. Water pump, hoses, t-stat, radiator, alternator, clutch and such are all factory. I did replace the whole brake system 4 years ago. I have 330ish k on it it. My truck is a reg cab so it came with a bench seat. I pulled it out and put a 2nd gen 40/20/40 bench in with power. Truck is a LE so it's loaded. A/C still works great as well.

BTW its a 1993 Dodge Cummins D250 (2wd) reg cab long bed LE with 5-spd manual 3.55 gears and limited slip.

Unloaded trucks with 2pc shafts always shutter on take off. Just how they are. Some ppl can't stand it so the OEM's comes up with shiming the carrier down to reduce it. It won't hurt the truck. My 93 has been shuttering while unloaded on take off since new.

I'm thinking about adding a steering brace to my 07 truck. My ride is fine with factory shocks and airlift air bags. Do you run air bags?

Yep, I installed bags but didn't really end up needing them. I only put about 10 PSI in them when towing and I "think" it improves the ride slightly.
My 93 was a great truck and I'd still have it if my son hadn't gotten too big for it. It was loaded just like yours except it was an auto and had the captains seats. It had bigger injectors, inj pump and air filter. Man would it pull hard. I could smoke the tires off the line or get them to chirp if going slow and made it down-shift. At 100k I think it may have been getting ready for a trans though ~ gosh, I wonder why?
Now I'm older and don't care so much about power - the 03 with minor mods (+ about 40 HP) is a great puller but isn't as comfy as the first gen was.
