Side Mirrors

Post by BobnPi on 8/1/2010, 9:31 am

My 2007 2500HD Diesel Chevy 2WD only has the small mirrors that came with the truck. I'm looking for suggestions on replacing them with something more friendly for towing. I'd like input as to the pros and cons for slip on extended mirrors vs replacing the entire assembly. Also, any aftermarket mirrors recommended? Can you get aftermarket mirrors that have electric adjustable mirrors with wiring that is compatable with what I currently have?

If GM is like Dodge you can buy OEM tow mirrors that bolt right up and are plug and play. You can get these at the dealer, ebay, etc. I wouldn't go with the slip/slide on mirrors as they are very small and vibrate a lot. I'd spend the extra money on the factory tow mirrors. If you already have power and heat, you can get the factory tow mirrors in power and heat as well. I don't know why some dealers don't spec towing mirrors for their inventory orders. If it's diesel and or has tow package, order the tow mirrors too, duh! Dumb dealers

I am using the CIPA brand custom towing mirror. It is a slide on mirror that covers the equipment mirror and has a screw down on the back. They are custom fit by make, year and model of vehicle. Custom to right and left side as well. They are NOT the type that are held on by bands. They are a snug fit and I find no vibration with them. I have used them on three tow vehicles and pulled around 100K miles with no problems. They run about $30-40 a piece and can be found in most any large camping supply store.

I use those same mirrrors. Have been very satisfied with them. But I get tired of putting them on and off. Gonna pop for a set of the OEM tow mirrors soon. About $600-$700 at Chevy dealer. Found some replacement aftermarkets on Ebay for about $300-400.

Being cheap, that is retired on fixed income, I opted for the "slide-on" mirror. Been using them since '05 with no troubles. The OEM replacement sounds rather pricey for me! Good luck!

The sad thing is most of the salvage yards around here sell them pretty quick and they almost want dealer price for them. I can"t justify paying dealer price for them. I'll keep using the slip ons. They have worked very well. But the tow mirrors are on my "Dont gotta have but really like the way they look and want list" LOL

I used the CIPA slip on mirrors on the Dodge I used to own and was pleased with the result.

I have a 2008 2500HD and bought some made aftermarket tow mirrors by kool view. They look exactly like the OEM tow mirrors but were only $231 for the pair at fenderworld. The top mirror does tend to vibrate at high speed which gets aggravating. If I did it again I would get the ones from GM. I think my dealer sells them for around $500

Thanks for all the input. I'll do a bit of pricing research before buying, but will probably to with the ones from GM. Just have to work some more OT before I can purchase.

BayouDude, many years ago I would catch a boat out of Dulac. In 1969, Camille opened my eyes to the reality that I really didn't need to work offshore to make a living. Haven't been back since.

The CIPA mirrors are high quality. No vibrations and stay exactly where you adjust them. Your OEM mirrors are still fully adjustable unlike the strap-on types of mirrors.

I was about to pull the trigger on OEM tow mirrors before finding the CIPA's. I'm very glad I tried the CIPA's first. Very good product for around $80 bucks for the pair.

If you want OEM for a much lower cost try gmpartsdirect.com.You will need to verify which part # you need but should be around $320.
Even if its a Classic 07 you can update to the newer larger towing mirrors with little problem. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=220527

Thanks for all the input. I went with the factory mirrors and am happy with them. Pricey, but I got them installed in less than an hour and they look and work fine.
