I Need A New Trailer Brake Controller (Any Suggestions as to Brand & Model?)

Post by Mountain Jack on 7/27/2010, 8:47 am

Talked to tech support at Hayes and the Hayes Syncronizer controller I have is defective. He suggested I go with a controller that provides proportional control instead of a timed controller which I currently have.

He suggested the Hayes Energizer 3 as being the Hayes controller he would recommend.

I am not at all familiar with the different models available. I would prefer a controller with a wiring harness I can just plug in or worse case senario hard splice it in to the current connector under the dash.

Any suggestions as to brand and model I should look at that will provide me with adaquate braking?

I like my Tekonsha Prodigy controller. It provides smooth digital proportional control and has a digital readout of the voltage strength going to the brakes.

I've used my Tekonsha Prodigy for about eight years and it works perfectly.

MaxBrake and BrakeSmart are the top two on the market if you don't mind spending the money. I have the BrakeSmart and its the best controller I've ever had. Just need to get around to swapping it from my 93 to my 07 or I may give the MaxBrake a try instead. Right now I'm using the Tekonsha P-3 and it sucks badly. One time it works perfect, next time not enough brakes or way too much. It keeps you guessing when you put your foot on the brake. But this is normal for these type of controllers.

I second that of what bsmall2800 has. That is what I have.
