Sofa Removal?

Post by Mountain Jack on 7/22/2010, 2:50 am

My DW is looking at possibly removing the sleeper sofa and replacing it with a dual recliner. Is it possible to remove the original sofa though the narrow entry space & door without any major problems?

I didn't have any problems removing mine, but it was the jack knife sofa. I can't imagine it wouldn't break down with a little wrenching. I put a dual wall away recliner in its place and don't regret it! Sure makes watching tv and taking an afternoon nap more enjoyable. Most of the recliners have a frame on the bottom that will allow you to dismantle and haul into the camper in two pieces and reassemble. Here are a few pics of mine and the process of installation. Good luck!

People we bought our 5er from had removed the couch and put in 2 recliners. I had orginally thought that was a crazy idea, until I seen these pictures!!!!!!!

Carpe, where did you pick that recliner set up? Man that looks like the way to go! With the bunks up front we've never used the sleeper sofa for the intended purpose anyway. Very nice!

We found the recliner at a local furniture store. I don't recall the brand. We just kept looking until we found the wall away feature and one that could be broken down easily. Weight was an issue too, as we didn't want to add more than we were taking out. By feel, this one isn't much heavier than the sofa we took out. I agree with you, we never used the sofa for its intended purpose either and it was painful to watch movies on. I have even slept on this a few times being gracious to a few guest and offering my bedroom.....it wasn't the best sleep in the world, but it worked in a pinch.

We also removed the sofa, but ours was a futon.
At a local furniture store we bought 2 recliners after checking lots of stores with a tape measure.
The recliners were still in there boxs in their warehouse and to our luck they were in 2 pieces. The backs of the recliners just snap into place so we carried them in and assembled them inside.
We also enjoy them so much more than the futon sofa. Were not camping this weekend, but next week i will take a few pics and post them.

CD, thats the kinda recliner I've had in my mind to go look for. I'm glad you posted the pic's. That will def be my next MOD. That jack knife kills me to sit on and try and watch a movie.

Is there a brand name on the recliners ?

La-Z-Y Boy makes recliners that come apart. Just move a lever and the back lifts off of the chair. I'm sure they have dual recliners. If you don't find the color you want, you can select leather or a fabric and they will cover one for you. It will take a few weeks, I suppose. They would probably have to charge for the more expensive fabrics.

We aren't that patient - when we decided we wanted a recliner for our living room, we didn't want to wait - fortunately they had what we wanted in stock.

That jack knife lasted two years too long and we made the change and what a world of difference. I looked tonight and it was an ashley furniture brand. I looked on their website, but couldn't find the exact one. This one is close, but has a center console. I don't know if the measurements would work, you would have to measure. Here is a link. Look at the first links related products links. I did this mod after we installed the recliner love seat to hold beverages. It was a flip down beverage holder from a marine store here in town. I added them to either side and they will hold most average drinks and glasses. The little hook flips out of the way for bigger glasses. Nice to hold a drink or my coffee in the morning.

Yours look like the two end seats that go to a theater style sofa.

You can add more chairs in the middle and wedges. they had one at Rooms to Go.

Your sleeper sofa will come apart easy. The back lifts straight up to come off. Grab one side and pull up on it to get it started then lift the other side a bit and the whole thing will come right off so the sofa will easily go out the narrow door.
I took out our sofa and put in two low profile Lazy Boy Recliners and we couldn't be happier with our decision. We also got rid of the dinette and now have a double drop leaf table and four chairs. Takes up less space and is much more comfortable.

We want to replace our couch with dual recliners as well. And I like the center console. We would probably have room because our dinette is already out.

We have the 32QBBS, too, but we have the optional half bath, so our TV is actually mounted to the right as you come in the door past the steps to go up to the full bathroom.

I am concerned that if our recliners do not swivel and are separated, then our TV viewing will be very uncomfortable.

Do any of you guys with the 32QBBS have the optional half bath??? If so, is this hurting your neck trying to watch Sunday night footbal?

Thanks.
