Trailer Height

Post by Mopar_Earl on 7/17/2010, 3:57 pm

I measured my trailer's height a few weeks ago. With factory 16" wheels and the suspension in the top holes, my 2009 28RKSB (not BS as they are higher yet) is 12'3" at the highest point which is my bathroom roof vent cover. The A/C unit would of been the highest point otherwise which was 12'1" which the factory says 11'11". These numbers are close but rounded. Trailer was parked level on level concrete and measured from the concrete pad up to the bottom of a PVC pipe with a level on it, which was placed on the various items. If you pull your trailer unlevel, that will also change your height.

When we bought our cat we had a satellite system installed, our hight with the dome now is 13`1. Scares me on some backroads, but havent had any low clearances that we couldnt fit under yet.

Bone stock 2006 29RLBS - 12'-0" w/ 15" tires. That's level grade to the top of the A/C unit.

My 2005 RLBS after adding the vent covers (Bathroom cover the highest point) and moving the springs to raise the 5th wheel so it will be almost level when towing. It measures 12ft 7 inches.

While following my GPS through Altoona, PA I came to a 11'3 clearance and lucky the warning sign was there and I was able to make a quick right onto the last side street and avoided backing down a one lane street with heavy traffic. My greatest fear when driving through towns and cities with my trailer in tow is getting trapped @ a low clearance. Lucky I'm smart enough to know my height and to pay attention to low clearance signs and the pre-warning ones. I use a truckers atlas for low clearance listings but they only list routes and not roads and streets. I'm seriously looking at trying this POI Low Clearance database http://www.lowclearances.com/index.html for my Garmin.

Earl, I really like the idea of that database and will probably give it a try. We just returned from a trip to New Brunswick, Canada and had a real close one. We crossed the border in Calais, Maine and when we got to customs there was a large overhead steel structure at the booths that was designated at 12'-6". We had never seen any signs about heights prior to arriving at customs but we were busy watching for our routes and could possibly have missed a sign if there was one. There was a lot of traffic behind us and nowhere to go. I knew our height in the brochure was listed as 12'-4" but started sweating bullets because as you indicate a lot of information given by manufacturers is not 100% correct. After clearing customs I proceeded real sloooooow. Fortunately we got through without a problem ( only 2" clearance ). Coming back into the US we came through on a fairly new stretch of highway that had new custom booths and the customs booths had an overhead canopy that was at least 20' high. When we returned home I measured the Cat and it was 12'-4" to the highest point which is a vent cover over the bathroom. The next highest point would be the skylight over the shower which I am guessing is about 2 or 3" lower. We have 15" wheels and the suspension is in the bottom set of holes. Thanks for the info.

A shop where we had our WC serviced had a 14 ft. door. Our radio antenna was about six inches taller than the door. The highest point on our WC is the vent cover which is 12' 10". How I know this is when on our trip, in Denver Colorado, they had a truck wash, that had a bar height of 12' 8" and we could not drive under it. We were about two inches taller. Our truck is a 4x4 with the camper package, so it is about as tall as a stock Ford can be. Our WC has the axles under the springs, so it rides level with our truck, but makes the WC very tall. We have 16" wheels and tires.

Maxtor I am riding about the same as you with our 32QBBS. 16" wheels, springs over axles. I had a building put up at my house to park my wildcat under and it has 14' celing height. My radio antenna slaps all the rafters.

Re: Trailer Height

Post by MountainMan on 7/19/2010, 9:21 am

On our trip home from a local state park yesterday we stopped at a Dairy King for Ice cream. We were camping with several other friends all with 5ers.

There is a long narrow pull-off across the road from the Dairy King for the truckers to pull over and get ice cream/lunch. Three of us pulled into this parking area in a single file.

While we were eating our ice cream my buddies pointed over to the campers and said "look how much taller the Wildcat is than our two".

They were right. Our Cat looked nearly a foot taller than the 40' Open Range behind us and a nearly that much taller than the 36' Sunny Brook two behind us.

I knew from following my buddy with the 40' Open Range I was taller because of the low tree limbs he could drive under while ours would hit.

They traded a 28RK Wildcat for the Open Range. Its 10' longer and around 3000lbs heavier but he swears its easier to tow and gets slightly better gas milage than towing their Cat. (Much less wind resistance with the nose design and less height of the Open Range I guess.)

Proof is in the pudding er' picture.

The good thing about our tall WC's is that when you are in the bedroom, my head has plenty of clearance. On the negative side, when closing or opening the vent in the living room, I had to purchase a long handled reacher.
Our fuel mileage suffers with a head wind.

Yeah, I feel the lights and other ceiling accessories when walking through the bathroom. I'm a mere 6'3 without shoes. The ceiling there is 6'4. You just learn to duck. I hate the main door. I wish they could be had taller than 6'

Yes,,, on this last trip, I would scrunch down in the seat when going under some of the overpasses. Even when the signs say 15' clearance, it looks close to me.

Last year on the scenic route on the south side of Lake Ontario just west of Rochester, NY, we encountered these beautiful curved "arched" over-passes. I realized it too late and we smacked the fridge vent. It broke out the corner, I taped it up and it was still that way when I traded it in. Since then, I always check on-line first. I may go with the site that Earl put on, it looks much more up to date.
