Just got back from Fort Knox

Post by TC on 7/10/2010, 3:26 pm

We just got back from our son's graduation at Fort Knox.

We got to see the gold repository as we were driving in. The main entrance is aptly named Bullion Blvd.

Here's our son in his "Class A's" right after the graduation banquet. The Army gave him back to us stacked high and tight!! The transformation from boy to man in 4 months is incredible!!

Getting ready to march back to the barrracks and pull an "all-nighter" of cleaning to make ready for the next group of Cavalry Scout recruits.

We were able to take a day of "vacation" for ourselves in between graduation activities. We spent the morning at Mammoth Caves near Bowling Green and spent the afternoon visitng the Maker's Mark distillary near Lebanon.

Here's the DW ducking under a low overhang at the Mammoth Cave's Frozen Niagra entrance.

A cave cricket.

A couple or formations inside the cave.

Here's a few on the grounds of the Maker's Mark Distillary.

The graduation ceremony was full of pomp and circumstance due to the rich tradition of the Cavalry Scout.

A new set of recruits marching in formation by the theater just as the graduation ceremony was ending.

Before we left the base, we toured the Patton Museum. I highly recommend this as a "must-see" when in the area!!

Oh, we stayed at Louisville KOA, tried to find Makers Mark, we drive, and drive, and drive, and finally turned around and went to Jim Beam. They told us that Jim Beam owns Makers Mark.

Jim Beam gives free samples, did Makers Mark?

You bet ya!!

They just happened to be showing off a new blend called Maker's 46...smooth all the way down! I didn't hesitate to buy a fifth to keep for special occasions.

BTW, Maker's Mark distillary is just east of Loretto, Ky.; south and east of Elizabethtown. The visitor's center in Elizabethtown has brochures that have a map and addresses for each distillary in the area. For Maker's Mark, we followed 31E to 52 (very winding and scenic roads) and followed the signs from there. We wanted to visit the Wild Turkey distillary as well, but it was clear up near Versailles; too far away for us to fit it into our tight schedule.

I didn't know that Jim Beam owns Maker's Mark, but it doesn't surprise me. They're a huge player in that arena.

For those who appreciate good Bourbon and have a whole day to kill while in that part of the country, you can pick up a passport at any one of the participating distillaries, I.E., Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey, etc. I think there were about 6 or 8 of them in total. If you visit every one of these distillaries and get your passport punched, they will send you a free T-shirt commemorating your experience.
