Keep your Cats
New law in California, that requires all Diesel pickups 1998 and newer with a gross weight up to 14K must go through a smog check. I was hit with it this year. Many diesel owners removed their cats and installed aftermarket exhaust systems, some without the cat. If you did not keep your cat, it could get expensive replacing it. The smog check cost $52 and consists of
1. Visual inspection to make sure all components were in place.
2. Check of any computer codes.
3. Revving up the engine and checking for excessive smoke.

Re: Keep your Cats
They've been doing that here in Washington state for some time. Not a big deal to me because I think you can get all the performance you need on a modern diesel without the old-fashioned smoke screen.
I'm curious how they know what to look for in regards to the components though. The guys at our test stations know next to nothing about anything automotive.

In NH inspections are done by licensed garages and dealers on a fee basis. I take mine back to my dealer in October (birth month) each year and get it done for free.
And yes, these guys know what they're doing and what to look for.

Rural Georgia,,,,, They stopped doing inspections when I was around 10yrs old I think, Atlanta area you have to have inspections.
And GA just now made it mandatory to wear seat belts in a truck.
I was thinking with the low budgets they would remember the inspections, I kinda hope they keep forget'n.

Re: Keep your Cats
Diesel emissions testing is spreading like a wild fire. No worries for me, my truck is stock. 325HP is more power than I need, so I've never wanted to mod out my truck.

Re: Keep your Cats
My 2000 Diesel is non-catalyst and has CA emissions. My exhaust is a 4" pipe (after the 3.5" down pipe) and only goes through a resonator before it exits. I got rid of the factory muffler. It was too restrictive.
And I don't have plans to move the California. I do visit a lot. Almost too much for my own good.
