Bedroom Slide Leak

Post by oldelmer1 on 5/2/2008, 7:24 am

First topic message reminder :

Since I still have this problem, I decided to take the black rubber piece off from underneath and trim it. Took the white vinyl strip out and removed all the screws out of the white aluminum strip. Noticed that the black rubber is stapled into place, removed all the staples.

Also had to remove some of the screws off the side strips too cause the side rubber was stapled along with the bottom rubber.

The aluminum strip had caulk on the bottom, so when I took the aluminum strip and rubber off, there was lots of water inside. I think this caulk was stopping the water from draining out when it rains, which it did yesterday.

Cut 1 inch off of the bottom of the rubber. Put extra rope caulk onto the white aluminum strip and used that to hold the black rubber in place as I put the screws back in.

Now, the rubber is almost flush with the camper, as before it was bubbled way out. The corners really fit flush too, where before, there was a little pocket where the bottom and the side rubbers met up.

When the caulk dries, I will spray it with the hose to see if I FINALLY FIXED IT!

Actually the Sandpiper is the original trailer that I wanted when I bought the Wildcat(they were parked side by side) they still have it and its marked down $18000 less than when I first looked at it.

I'm new to the forum because I'm searching for a solution to a bedroom slide leaking problem. After reading all the posts I'm not anyone has found a long term solution. Is this true? It looks to me that water can collect in the pocket formed by the vertical and horizontal rubber seals and wick into the interior. Has anyone tried cutting a hole in the seals to allow the water to drain out? or not allow it to collect?

My problem was not there, cause I put a paper towel in that pocket and when it rained, the paper towel never got wet.

I think its running inside the white vinyl strip(that covers the screw heads) in the corner molding. Some have put a channel like diverter there to divert the water away from the corner. But, I wouldn't cut the rubber till I try the paper towel in there first.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Thanks Oldelmer1. I'll make sure to run some tests before I start hacking. We've had the WC since 2004 and we just noticed the leak. Have you resolved your leak?

It has not leaked since I cut off 3 inches of the white vinyl cover. But I also put some plumbers puddy along the edge where the corner molding meets the black rubber.

Got the trailer back from having a new floor installed, then it rained and it leaked 200% more than ever before, water just pours thru the one corner thru the black plastic, I even peeled away the bottom plastic strip and it still poured in, very *!$$ed right now.

Amazing that such a simple leak can cause so much trouble. I hope you don't have to replace the floor again.

The dealer "fixed" our bedroom leak last year. We just discovered on our first trip this year it is still leaking. This is why our next fifth wheel will NOT be from Forest River.

Stick of dynomite??

Only way mine got fixed was to bend and twist Rod Batt's ear enough that they hauled it back to factory and completely rebuilt the slide seal system.

Mine seems to have stopped. I think cutting the vynal strip back fixed mine.

So far, anyhow.

Well this past weekend I noticed that the rear drivers side wall is delaminating, what to do next, I just e-mailed Rod Batts. I will never buy another Forest River trailer.

wvhunter, it happens to any brand. its not just FR's. I saw a couple of models on a used lot that had that type of problem. But I understand your frustration.

I can attest that oldelmer1's fix, cutting off 3 inches of the white vinyl cover, worked for us too. We cut it but did not cut it completely off. We pulled it down to angle it as a water diversion. Now when we get a heavy rain, it runs along the edge of the slide and down the cut part and right onto the ground and not into the bedroom.

Is your white vinyl on the bottom of your slide, or across the side of the slide.?

Mine is across the bottom of the slide, but I noticed that MAXTOR's vinyl is located on the side of the slide.

I wonder of we took a pole, how many leak with the vinyl on the bottom, verses how many leak with the vinyl on the side of the slide.

PHILLIP, can you do a post or a sticky to ask this question?

Does you bedroom slide leak?

Is your vinyl on the side or the bottom of the slide?

Thanks,
Tom.

My vinyl is on the bottom and it is completely filled in with silicone so there is no way for water to come in that way.
