Post by pioneerman on 6/25/2010, 4:45 am

The god lord willing and the creeks dont rise (which i doubt in northwest oklahoma) we are heading for south fork colorado in the morning. hope to get an early start before it gets hot. has been 100 the last 2 or 3 days here. we work at a campground called fun valley during the summer and have met a lot of nice people over the last 6 years. (whoops, guess i put this in the wrong place.)

Wrong location or not, I am with you. We have had 3 weeks of 98-105 temperature. Hoping for a little break next week. We will go to Colorado for the same reason --to cool off. Planning on using a wedding in Durango as the excuse to get there. May get through Fun Valley on the way home.

It was 10pm last night ,,,, I was soaking wet standing on a pile of rock at work telling a tractor operator where to pull some rock from.
Humidity and heat was so high it was like you were swimming.
Wish you were here maxtor.....

It seems as though the entire CO front range is overheated. I have a friend in Berthoud; he said it was 98 there yesterday. That's hot for this time of year! Hope this heat doesn't spark forest fires as in years past.

I just saw a long range forecast which indicated the month of July will be above normal for New Mexico and Colorado, with the southern part of Colorado and New Mexico to be considerably above normal. Our going to Colorado to cool off may be wishful thinking?

We head for Brookings Oregon when things get hot here. 66/65/61/60/60 are the highs for this week. The RV park we stay at is right on the beach.
Beachfront RV Park is where we stay. Nice sandy beach, beautiful ocean views etc. etc.
We will be heading out there in a couple of weeks.
We need to get as many of us that can make it this year to meet at the ocean (PACIFIC) for a couple of weeks. Only problem is going back home to the heat, and in some areas HUMIDITY.

That area of the coast is great in the summer. We lived in Arcata California for a couple of years (back in our tent camping days). Have been thru Redding sveral times during the summer. YOur heat will match ours anytime.

My thought would be to get into the mountains and CLIMB. Find a campsite at altitude. Temperatures decline (on average) 3.5 degrees F. per 1000 feet of altitude gain.

Glen, Where I go in Wyoming is over 9000 ft and it was over 80 F. there today! That's hot for that altitude this time of year.

The Pacific Ocean coast is the only place you are going to get out of the heat for sure. Northern California and points north of that, IE Oregon and Washington coast.

We will be headed back to Okla. tomorrow, not looking forward to the heat. We have been on a big loop through the west, hottest was 99 in Modesto, coolest was 41 at Mt. Shasta. Most mornings have been in 50's or low 60's. (81 at 6:00 at home)
The nicest campground we have stayed at was at Broadman Or. It is city run and is very well kept, right on the Columbia river.

Where are you now? Maybe I could give you some ideas of what to see on the way back.

You could go over Independence pass in Colorado,,, it is only 12,095 ft. or if you don't like heights, you could go over Loveland Pass that is only 11,990 ft.
Of course Mt. Evans scenic byway is only 14,160 ft.

As I was telling Oldelmer1,,,, Colorado has mountains,,,, Maryland has hills.

We are headed that way tomorrow. Durango on Friday, Purgatory for a wedding on Saturday and then a few more days in the Pagosa Springs area.
Looking forward to something other than 100 degree days.

Some of my co-workers were in Silverton for the 4th said the fireworks were great. We camped on Lizardhead pass and rode the tram from the top down to Telluride for the fireworks. Tram ran till midnight so we were able to ride it back up to the top then only 8 miles back to our 10000 foot campsite. :)
