Safety Chains?

Safety Chains?
Never really thought about it until this weekend when I pulled the Cat out of storage.
Does anyone use safety chains on a 5th wheel? I have the connection points in the bed of my truck that came with the B&W 5th wheel companion hitch but there are NO chains on the camper. If I go and buy them, I don't see a connection point on the 5th wheel???
1. Do I need safety chains?
2. Where would I connect them to the hitch (if I do need them)?
thanks!

Re: Safety Chains?
Those chain hooks on your B+W are for if you put the ball in and tow a gooseneck trailer. Fivers do not need safety chains to my knowledge. In theory, a ball hitch could pop up and come off the truck where a fifth wheel plate with jaws would be near impossible to fail unless operator didn't close the jaws. Which you would know right away as your tailgate would be destroyed.
Whether you are towing a fiver or ball hitch, you are suppossed to have a totally seperate eye bolt or something to connect your break away switch cable. A lot of people just hook it anywhere. On my companion, I hook it in the loop on the pin for the jaws. I have been meaning to do something different but haven't.

Re: Safety Chains?
If the trailer ever comes loose from a 5th wheel hitch you are going to want to lose it, not keep it hitched to the truck with chains. That would be one wild ride with the trailer moving all over the inside of the pickup bed, probably tipping over and taking the truck with it.
The goose neck trailers have that long goose neck that keeps the trailer from hitting the bed rails if it comes off. I'd hate to have the 5th wheel trailer with a standard kingpin jumping around on the bedrails at 60 miles per after it detached from the hitch.
Let it go and let the insurance cover it.

What you want for your 5th wheel is a bed saver. We have one just in case of
1. jaw failure.
2. vandalism.
3. human error
4. peace of mind.
