towing boat behind wildcat?

Post by boyce on 6/20/2010, 4:32 am

Im in the process of putting a receiver on the back of the wildcat for towing the boat. I have towed this way with 2 other fifthwheels so I understand the laws and general "how to's" of this set up. My question is, has anybody had problems with this on a wildcat? The frame rails are alot wider on the wildcat than my previous 5er so fabbing the hitch looks to require a little more bracing. Last question, where did you guys tie in for trailer lights? did you splice into lights or is there a junction box in the back end?

My dealer had it all set up for me a local fab shop. Mine was a custom hitch very securely welded to the frame at many points. They spliced into the lights.

Mine came with a 1.25" receiver and could hardly hold up a bike rack. I had a local fab shop weld a new 2" hitch on the back. I also had them weld it to the bumper too. Even though the bumper doesn't have much strength, I figured maybe the hitch would help it if we got rear ended. Seems real solid now. I didn't do the wiring yet. Mainly use it for bikes.

I have one that Wildcat put on at the factory. Haven't tied hauling the boat yet, I have to get use to towing the 5'er first.

Mine came with a receiver from the factory but is was only rated at 3,500 lbs. I tow a enclosed trailer with ATVs in it so I am closer to 5,500 lbs. I had to beef up the existing hitch and now it's more than twice as strong as it was originally. I also ran the wiring all the way from the front wiring connection box by the pin to the back because I wanted the brakes on the enclosed activated also. I just opened one side of the underbelly and ran it from back to the front. I was a little tricky fishing the wiring cable up through the overhang to the front connection box because I didn't want the wiring exposed.

lograf, does your break controller handle the extra axles? My boat has hydrolic surge brakes so no need for going that route with wiring but I have been thinking about gettin a back up camera for the back of the 5er to be able to watch the boat, and I dont think the wireless ones will transmit that far, so I might have to run the wires up front anyway.

Yes, I have a Prodigy and it will handle the 4 axles. I'm also running a PRXB PacBrake (exhaust brake) which really helps slow you down. I also utilize and equilizer hitch on the enclosed so I can eliminate alot of the tongue weight on the back of the WC. Right now I'm working on adding an anti-sway system to the equilizer hitch to help with the enclosed wanting to sway some. I didn't like the sway when you get into a side wind situation.

Lograf, check the thread below some good pointers in there. While others have beefed there hitches up considerably, mine did just fine pulling my 18.5 Aluminum Crestliner. Never once had a problem. Also, a cheaper way to keep an eye on the boat (versus a camera) would be to put "feelers" on the boat. I didn't have them, but many people do. They mount flexible antenna type rods on the fenders of their boat so they can see them in the sideview mirrors.

Good luck! It's a little hair raising at times, but my set up pulled pretty easy. As long as you don't try to race people you'll never know that boat is back there.
