Dumping at Flying J

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 6/8/2010, 2:50 am

This was in Scruffy's e-mail box a couple days ago.

  • Maintenance - escalating expenses associated with normal usage and the misuse and abuse of waste dump stations
  • Municipalities - rising costs from local sewer treatment service providers
  • Regulatory - increasing expenditures linked to stringent corporate responsibilities

Yup. A big topic of discussion over on the RVForums board. I also looked at my FlyingJ account online, and the "coupons" for dumping have an expiration date as well. I think mine are something like 9/31/2010 (as of 6/8/2010). I don't normally dump at FJ, but have always kept them in mind as a reserve if needed.

Flying J is going to alienate themselves from their RV customers (and their money) if they keep this nonsense up!!

A lot of the rest area's in georgia have a dump station you can still use for free. Do other states have them ?

Wa. state rest stops have free dump sites - kinda, we pay an extra $3 on our RV tabs to keep them going.
So feel free to stop by and drop a load. (wouldn't that make a great new state motto!)

Texas used to have the dump stations at the rest areas, but no more. At least the ones that have been "updated".

Some rest areas in states where we travel have dump stations, some don't. I've noticed when driving through Texas there are trailer dump signs along the highway near campgrounds. I suppose one could pull off and use their dump stations for a fee. We have a state park nearby where we can dump if we need to. We usually take care of that at the last campground where we stay, and use facilities in rest areas for the rest of the trip home.

We've never used a dump station at Flying J or any other truck service area, but it was kind of nice knowing we could. In a pinch, I guess we'd be happy to pay the fee.

We've always used the Flying J's dump station when returning from the local state park. It has saved us from jockeying for position at the CGs dump station along with everyone else leaving to head back home about the same time on Sunday.

We all are aware of rising costs and they see this as a way of making a few extra $ to offset their rising costs of doing business. I am sure their water and sewage bill has gone up like most of ours. In the real world $10 is not that much, less than 2 packs of cigarettes, and you probably made money if you stayed at Walmart for free and now need to dump. Just a cost of traveling and enjoying the lifestyle.
