Where do you put the fire wood

I've read different post of people asking , how do other people carry fire wood without it getting in the way and here is my solution besides how can you go camping without a hot fire and a cold beverage (margarita) My bed has a bedliner made for 2x4's to hold things in place so i cut a piece of 3/4" plwood to fit then trimmed it with pieces of 1"x2". What you can't see is that the plywood is 1" wider than the trim, thats the part that is in the slot, the trim is to keep it from warpiing when not in the bed. Pictures are'nt they great

Nice idea Mark.
We also put ours along the back much like you did in the photo, but we have even stacked it on both sides of the hitch without anything holding it in place.
I've found that you can get quite a bit more wood in the bed if you take the extra time to stack it neatly.

I buy it on site. Transporting firewood any distance is heavily frowned on these days. We are almost always going more than 50 mile or across a state line.

Re: Where do you put the fire wood
My truck bed is clear of nuisance things like those fiver holder thingys
so I have lots of room for the truly important crap/junk.
I also have a canopy so I can keep all my crapulance safe and dry.
Now what was the question? Oh ya, I keep my firewood in a plastic cement-mixing tub. Holds lots and keep the debris from getting everyplace.

What Glenn said. Many CG's don't want or allow out of state firewood. Many reasons given and some of them valid. If I'm gonna have a fire, I prefer to buy it at the CG that I'm camping at.
You wouldn't believe some of the folks who pull in here with a utility trailer load of firewood for the long week-end. They do burn it (night and day) though.

Cool idea if you're able to haul your own wood. I camp 99% of the time in PA State Parks and I can't bring wood with me due to the emerald ash borer being brought into our State from other states. I just buy the wood there to be safe and no worries of fines and such. Also it's one less thing to load and unload and haul.

Re: Where do you put the fire wood
Nice setup Skinsfan.
There are a few things I absolutely refuse to pay a premium price for. Firewood is one of them!
I feel like I may as well be burning dollar bills. The prices some of these campgrounds charge for a few sticks of kindling are border-line criminal.
Firewood is all around me. We always have dead or blown down trees on our property. I'll include a pic of my back yard to give a little perspective as to why I think buying firewood would be slightly insane for us.
ATV, rope, chainsaw and a couple of winter weekends of work gives us all the camp firewood we need for a year.

I usually stack mine around the hitch and between the hitch and the tailgate. I haven't had any problems so far and can usually stack enough for the weekend between the hitch and the tailgate. I just try to stack it so it won't interfere with the trailer wiring.

Re: Where do you put the fire wood
I only haul wood to the local CGs, never out of state. And, I never bring back unused wood from camping in another state. In fact, I give my truck a good inspection inside and out before pulling away from the area, seeing as how we cut and haul our own wood to our site. We do a lot of dry camping in Wyoming and Colorado. The past few years, their trees have been decimated by a beetle that's not even native to the area. It seems as though the "global warming" is to blame for their rapid movement as the winters evidently have not been harsh enough to implement a seasonal kill-off.
Our local CGs want a premium for bundled wood. For some, it's the best/only choice. But we keep several chords of wood year round, so for us, it's more economical to take and use our own.

Luckily, we don't have any restrictions in this area so theres never a problem with bringing your own wood. Frankly, it would take all the fun out it if I had to pay.

Re: Where do you put the fire wood
We too stack it in front of the hitch. We have a plastic tool bin up there and still have plenty of room to neatly stack firewood along side and fill up the area along the hitch. We don't have anything holding it in place. It settles and rides good. I can normally get enough for a 3 day weekend. Everyone has different fires though.
Here too in WI, we can only transport it 50 miles and not from certain counties. Not enforced though. Not even at State Parks.

We cheat and carry Duraflame Fire Logs in the basement. One match and we have a fire for 2 - 3 hours.

Re: Where do you put the fire wood
In our previous life of camping we often had campfires. We haven't had a fire in THIS life (kids grew up and moved out). We talked about it though on our last trip to the local campground. We have a gas tank/tool box at the front of our bed, so wouldn't be able to carry wood there. I suppose we would just place it around the hitch. The local campground has firewood bundles for sale - I don't know the price.
Nice firebox, Mark.
Good looking woods, MountainMan.

I keep a bag of match light charcoal in the pass through. Put about 10 briquettes and just put your logs on top. No messing around with kindling and it will even dry out moderately damp logs.

Re: Where do you put the fire wood
Tom, that's in our back yard. We had a new patio poured three years ago as part of our back yard renovation. This was taken before the landscaping was done around the edge of the patio.
The DW and I dig fires so much, we decided to have a fire pit put in at the same time the patio was poured so we could still enjoy evenings by the fire.
My next project is to have a top ring forged so we can put a swing-out grate over half of the pit for back yard BBQs. I can't wait to have a whole bunch of steaks sizzling over the top of wood coals.

It's a beautiful firepit. We've been wanting one but have just been looking at the ready-mades. This would be much nicer.

Re: Where do you put the fire wood
I need to show this to the wife. We wants a backyard fire pit. That's an easy way to do one. I don't know if the local FD would like it. I'm in the desert and back up to BLM land full of dry sage and juniper trees.
For camping, I take my own wood. I'm good friends with the forester in the Lake Tahoe basin so I get all the wood I need. I just put the wood behind the hitch.

When I go desert camping locally, I put my firewood up against the tailgate, low enough to miss the fiver hitch. That way I don't have to reach far to get the wood. It's good for one or two nights.

Before we can carry firwood ...
I need to get our Wildcat to the scales. Pre purchase we had the CAT weighed along with the dealers K3500HD (attached and individually). I also seperately weighed my K2500HD (before hitch was added) and I think we are up against the trucks 9200 max weight. All other weights, front axel, rear axel and combined are well within limits. And I suppose I need to consider the PA #3 weight sticker limiting the truck to 9k
