trailer brakes Help!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by racerx179 on 6/5/2010, 3:53 pm

Im on a camping trip in lancaster pa and on my way up it seemed liked my brakes weren't working on my 27bh. The light seemed to be working on the controlor but I noticed when I turned up the braking power on the control it would seem to dim. This is only the second trip since oct. Any easy things I could check ?

Yea, there should be a slide thing on the front of the controler that you can slide it to the left , or right depending on which model you have. either way it should lock the trailer brakes.
Let the truck roll a little in a driveway and without putting your foot on the brake pedal , slide the lever over. You should feel the trailer brakes grab. If you can't adjust the settings to grab harder and If you feel nothing you've got a bad problem.
If theres a RV dealer repair shop close by and theres no big hills to go down you should be able to slowly limp it into the shop with just your truck brakes if you don't have to go far. If you travel from Mich to Pa I'd be checking your truck pads to.

If you have your brake control manual, they normally have some trouble shooting info. If not, you can go to the controller OEM web site and pull up the manual. Out of adjustment brakes will cause weak brakes and the need for a higher gain setting. I adjust mine when I park it for winter.

If you disconnect your 7-way plug and than pull the break-away switch you should have locked wheels when you try to pull the trailer. If that works, that means your brakes are ok (but could need adjusting). Always disconnect your 7-way before pulling your break-away as it can fry some controllers. If your wheels aren't locked, you probably have a wiring issue between trailer junction box and the axles.

If the wheels lock from step above, than it's either truck wiring or the controller itself. Could have an issue in the 7-way trailer cord or where it connects inside the trailer junction box.

Make sure you adjust your controller as per the manual. Some need to be level adjusted as well as the gain.

trailer brakes

Post by slowtruck on 6/6/2010, 7:14 pm

I had the same thing happen on my 28rkwb when it was only a few months old. Check the wires back by the wheels and make sure the wires didn't rub thru. I had wires that got up against the wheel and rubbed thru and caused a short. Spliced back together and have worked ever since. Hope this helps.

Something else you can check...

We discovered that a film of corrosion/dirt can form on the umbilical connections. Take a couple of Q-Tips and some contact cleaner and give your contacts a good cleaning. It seems like I remember that Tom (oldelmer) used something on his connections once they were cleaned to prevent corrosion from forming again.

Most of the time, what seems like a major problem, is actually a simple fix.

Well I made it home. I checked the brakes in the campground before I left using the manual button and using the brake pedal. I have an older brake control that all I see written on it is actuator. It has a red manual button and a slide power adjustment. I did notice when I slid the power up to 3/4 -full power the light that comes on showing that it was working would be bright then dim all the way out but the brakes were still on. Any ideas on why the light is dimming out ? I've got a new prodigy p3 on order I hope that helps me.

So the brakes are working ?

Sounds like just a low end control unit. You'll see a world of difference with the new one.
