A different type of camping season...

Post by Glen Schumann on 6/3/2010, 1:04 pm

Have not posted much since last November, but since I now have the '06 29RLBS down here at Fort Knox, KY with me here is a post.

I drove home last Friday with the Trailblazer which now is with the DW in MN. Saturday AM picked up the WC from the RV place which does my work for me. In addition to the usual get it ready for the season stuff (bearings, brakes, summerize) it needed a new seal on the super slide and the converter needed to be replaced. Also paid foir then to go get the WC from storage at me in-laws where we store it. All together came to $1,365; another large hole in the highway!

After returning to the home in Winona, I got to work cleaning and conditioning the roof, washing and waxing the side walls, bug removal from the nose, sanitizing the fresh water system, cleaning/bleaching the awning, etc (you know the drill). Finished Sunday afternoon in time to leave for my Father's home three hours back toward KY. Stayed there overnight and left Memorial Day art 0700 for Ft. Knox. Trip went well; learned I need to replace the from tires on the truck and maybe some front end work to boot.

Now the WC sits in the RV storage lot on post. First camping trip as of now is July 4th weekend at a Green River Lake, a USACE recreation area about an hour away. DW will fly down for that and for our next planned excursion to Land Between the Lakes the first two weeks of August.

Much unlike the last two years when if DW was not working on a weekend, we were camping. Do expect that we may be able to camp every month over winter when DW comes to visit (assuming I get the extension for the second year of active duty).

Enough boring details. Just had to post again. Enjoy camping y'all! (using my best fake southern drawl

What ? I thought you were retired Glenn ? Good to hear from you, was wondering where you got off to.

I've always wanted to camp at Land between the lakes. Been by there passing through but never really went inside the park area.

You're correct in that I WAS retired. I volunteered for Retiree Recall and found my current assignment as Chief, Current Operations, U.S. Army Accessions Command here at Ft. Knox. If I get the second year (not guarenteed) DW and I will both be able to retire and start living our dream. The dream includes a LOT of camping combined with travel. One of the goals is to fill in the US AND Canadian maps in my signature.

I visited Land Between The Lakes once in the mid 70s with the first wife and our first daughter while we were visiting friends who were stationed at here at Knox. I hope the reality lives up to the memories; will try to submit Campground and Trip Reports time permitting. What will help with that is our personal IT assets now inlcude two WIFI capable laptops.

DW will also get to visit Paducah, KY a quilting mecca, and Graceland in TN (she is an Elvis fanatic).

Hi Glen,

Gee, if we'd have known(or remembered) you were at Ft. Knox, we'd have tried to look you up. We were there a few weeks ago with MAXTOR and his DW. We visited the Patton Museum while we were there.

Sorry we missed you....

We camped occasionally in Land Between the Lakes. We started in the early to mid 70's in that little Fleetwing trailer at the bottom of our signature, and quit in the early 80's. We stayed in Hillman Ferry Campground on the north end, and one in the south end (maybe Piney?). There was a restaurant near Hillman Ferry in Grand Rivers that we loved. It was called the Iron Kettle. I googled it, and in the late 90's it was sold at auction and became Patti's.... but since then it burnt down, and I don't think it has been rebuilt.

Great place to camp back then. We'd like to go back sometime soon.

Glen, We'll be down at Fort Knox on July 8th to see our son graduate. We've got a Cavalry Scout in our family.

We tried to get info on pulling our CAT down and staying at the Fort's CG, but we didn't get anywhere in the process. So we gave up and decided on a motel in Elizabethtown instead. Too bad too, I understand the Fort has a REALLY nice CG!

I saw the messages from you and MAXTOR; it would have been great to meet all of you. Unfortunately, I was all wrapped up in getting a ceremony to memorialize our new building as the LTG Timothy J. Maude complex on 27 MAY 10 ready to go. It would have been a brief get together.

My day starts a 0400 and I'm usually doing Army work at my apartment until turning in a 2100 (4 am and 9 pm for the unitiated). I average 10-11 hours at the office and 3-4 hours at home for the Army on weekdays and 4-10 hours for the Army each weekend.

Did you enjoy the Patton Museum? The Director is part of our Headquarters; he and I have worked together on a couple of projects including the Memorialization. He's from my native state of Wisconsin (although from a younger generation) and a really nice guy.

TC,

A small world, I have a DAC (Dept of the Army Civiliain) who is a retired Cav soldier. They are a breed apart. Are you aware the Armor Center and School is moving to Fort Benning, GA? They will be totally gone from Ft. Knox in about 15-16 months and then part of the Manuever Center of Excellence along with the Infantry School.

Congratulations on your son's graduation and thank you for his service and your sacrifice.

Ft. Knox has become the home of the Human Resource Center of Excellence (HRCoE). My organization is the senior organization in the HRCoE. Change is running wild around here.

I've checked out Camp Carlson; it's not my type of place. Sites too close together and not enough privacy for me and DW. May very well use it on occasion but looking more toward Corps of Engineer recreation areas nearby (there's six within two hours).

Glen,YES, we did enjoy the museum very much, although MAXTOR knew most of the models of tanks, where I only recognized the new modern ones. Laughing

Glen, I just got done talking to my son. They just got done doing their final 15K hike in battle gear. Also, seems they're already aware that there's a wind of change blowing over F. K. He got all emotional and said that the guys in F Troop were going to be some of the last to experience maneuvers in the hills of Kentucky.

Is the Patton museum something we should add to our itinerary? For that matter, any suggestions on things to see while in the area would be greatly appreciated.

TC,

I would see the Patton Museum. It is probably different from when I stopped with DW in Feb during her visit. They have been moving some of the Armor collection to Ft. Benning.

Another stop I would make is Mammoth Cave National Park less than 1.5 hours south of Ft. Knox. The heart of Louisville is only about an hour north; lot's to do there no doubt but I really haven't checked it out.

Have a great time with your son.

Mammoth Cave should be fun. I'll have to research Louisville to see what all they have to offer.
