rear camera mod

Post by volfirefighter on 6/2/2010, 2:15 pm

Hi all. I have copied a few mods from here and thanks for the great ideas. Last fall, I came up with my own mod so thought I should share. I installed a cheap rear camera on the back of the trailer, but not a wireless one. I picked it up for less than $20 from Ebay and it works great. I have a double din Kenwood head-unit with a 6.1" screen in the truck. The camera has four wires so what I did was use a 4 pin trailer plug and wire it from my head-unit to the trucks rear bumper where I located this 4 pin plug. On the trailer side, I mounted the camera higher up on the rear ladder. I ran the wire down under the trailer along the frame to the front, then up into the battery compartment and out the battery vent to the pin box with another 4 pin trailer connector on that end. When I hook the trailer up, I simply connect the 4 pin plugs together and then I get a rear view behind the trailer while I'm driving. Very simple and works great!!

Thanks! My sister has a wireless one on their trailer and they pick up security cameras in stores as they drive by, lol.

You can feed the wire up under the skin to the pin box and hide your wire. I installed a camera couple years ago and did almost the same thing with the wire. I need to find a better way to run the wire on the back of the camper. Great to have a camera and see what is going on behind you and helps in backing up to park.
