Upgraded conveter/charger with a 4-stage charger

Post by Mopar_Earl on 5/22/2010, 12:10 pm

We all know our converter/charger from the factory cooks batteries to their death and that the converter itself has a high failure rate. I've always installed this brand of converter/charger in my past trailers but the old style. Now they have this plug and play style that really speeds up the job and also allows you to reinstall the old converter if you sell your trailer and want to keep the good converter. I've been running this type of converter for 8 years and this is my third trailer and never had an issue!

The new converter is higher quality as well. The heat sink is a lot bigger. New has two fans, old only one. All the components they share on the board are heavier and bigger on the new one.

Fully automatic multistage charger!

Stage-1-14.4 volts (brings battery up to 90% charge quickly)
Stage-2 13.6 volts (finishes the charge)
Stage-3 float (maintains battery without cooking it)
Stage-4 equalize (but only 14.4 volts to protect the RV electrical components, normally this is 15 to 16 volts)

I saved the old converter so when I sale/trade my trailer I can swap them and keep the good converter.

I bought the converter from here

I almost wish mine would die so I'd have a good excuse to get a new one.

Just had my Parallax 7150 changed under warranty at the dealer (unless parallax rejects the claim). Bought the trailer new in January and the charger crapped out after three uses. I have zero faith in the stock charger. If mine goes out again I will replace it myself with something better. Did it mount in the existing hole without modifications? Also how much did it set you back?

It slides in just like the OEM section in the bottom of the power center. Cost was $233.50 shipped for the 55amp. You do need to change out the fuse board with a different one. It's no biggy. Take pics of all the wiring and you'll be able to use the pics later when putting it back together. Comes with 2 year warranty and you can buy optional extended warranty from the company's website.

Your converter is a 55A 12v. The 30A your speaking of is your 120v power main. I used the 55A 4600 since my old converter was 55A.

If you're wanting to upgrade from 30A 120v to 50A 240v service in your unit, you can. You need to buy a 50A power inlet for the side of the trailer (to replace factory 30A), 50A shore cord, a 50A breaker panel or 50A breaker panel/converter combo (to replace factory 30A), correct gauge wire (8 or 6ga) from the power inlet to the breaker panel and the needed breakers.

Thank you for the info. 50A breaker panel/converter panel is not something I am familiar with. Again thank you for the info. See if I can find some used parts or a wrecked trailer.

I have a 2009 qbbs. I leave it plugged into a 120v year round when I am not using it. There have been times when its been plugged in for over 90 days straight w/no problems. I have a dual battery set up its going on close to two years now and I have yet to have a battery bulge, leak or go bad. Did they fix the overcharging in the wildcat qbbs is that y I am not having problems or is it just to early to tell........ Question

I have also left my trailer plugged in every day of its life unless we are using it. It is an 06 and I have never had a single problem with the batteries yet. I have barely even had to add any water to the batteries. Every year I open them up expecting that this is the year that they will be dry and find that they are fine. I guess I am just lucky.

Moderate climate may be the cause? How hot does it get where you are at?
