Camping in Cape Cod
Anybody have any experience with Cape Cod? We will probably just be through there for a night, and then head over to the New London Ferry to go to Long Island.

We have been many times, I like Nickerson State Park in Brewster. No hookups and if you are going in the summer you will need reservations. If you are looking for a place with hookups, this place is decent Sweet Water Forest It is also in Brewster (around mid-cape). Hope this helps.

Jim, Nickerson is the one I was eyeing on the map. Do you have any pics of the place? Hook-ups are not needed, we travel with generator if power is needed. I was looking at trying to stay there the night of June 1st (Tuesday). Do you think a reservation will be needed?

I don't have pics, but I would recommend area 4. I just checked and site 053 is available that night. From what I remember (it's been a couple years since I was there) That is a nice site. I would consider reserving it since we will be coming off the Memorial day weekend and people might want to extend their stays. Reserve America is where you would go for that. Too bad you can't spend more time on the cape, it really is nice this time of year.

What about the low clearance on Hwy 6 and MA 149? Low Clearance web site says it is posted at 13'4". If that's true, I will only have 1" clearance, too close for me. Do they route you around it? Last Year running along the scenic route on the south side of Lake Ontario, I smacked the fridge vent on a "curved" overpass, that will sure make you pucker up!!!!!!

Getting to Nickerson, you would only need to be on Route 6 to exit 12 (if my memory is correct). I haven't taken the Wildcat down there, but I brought my Motorhome down many times with no problems. TT units use that route as well so I don't think there is any problems there with clearance.

Thank you, it makes it so much easier to plan things when you talk to somebody with knowledge.
Since you are in New Hampshire, I will be traveling across Hwy 2 above the White Mountain National Forest heading from Vermont to Maine. Any knowledge of that area?

No, sorry I live in the southern part of the state and only get up that way on occasion. Are you heading to the cape on Rt. 93? If you are then you should know that, because of propane, you are not allowed to go thru boston on the expressway. You would have to go around Boston on rt. 95 (locally known as rt 128). Then pick up rt 3 below Boston.

Also I see that you will be in the area of Mount Washington. If you have time it looks like the auto road could be open. Talk about pucker factor... WOW!! That road is something else. The view from the top on a clear day are amazing.

I was planning on taking 495 around Boston so that I can stay as far away from downtown as possible. Am I thinking wrong? Is there areas to camp around Mt. Washington?

495 will bring you around boston without problem. You will end up going over the Bourne bridge. I am not too familiar with that bridge so I can't comment on that.
Yes, there are campgrounds near Mt. Washington. When I was a kid we would go to Dolly Copp in Gorham. Again no hookups but it used to be a great place. I have been meaning to get back there for years but haven't made it yet. I am sure there are many others also.

I don't know your path of travel but we stayed at the Boston Minuteman Campground just off I-495 outside of Boston. We stayed there two years ago on our way to Maine and again on the way home. We are heading to Maine / New Brunswick in July and will stay there again each way. It is a very nice campgound with nice sized sites. They have on line reservations.minutemancampground.com

Re: Camping in Cape Cod
Brad, I have been thinking since I found out you were going down 495. You may want to get off just before you go over the bridge and take the road along the canal over to the Sagamore bridge. That will put you on Rt.6 and you will be set from there. Do a google map and take a look at what I'm talking about, it will make more sense.

Re: Camping in Cape Cod
Kwf904 - That is the route I was thinking also. How bad is traffic in the morning time? I am looking at making a reservation on the ferry out of New London. I'm estimating about about a 2.5 hour drive, does that sound about right?
KHUBER - Thanks for the heads up on the campground, looks like a nice place. If things fall where I need to stay in-land, we may use it.

Brad,
No camping experience with Cape Cod, but plenty with the Cross Sound Ferry. I believe that you'll pay by the foot and their web site (www.longislandferry.com) will give you the details.
Make your reservations ahead of time, especially when traveling with a 5th wheel trailer. After the ferry your choices are pretty limited as to getting around New York City. You'll either have to go north thru Westchester County (Throgs Neck Bridge) or through Brooklyn and over the Verazano Narrows Bridge to Staten Island and then New Jersey. Watch out for the "parkways" on Long Island. They are old, with low overpasses and are marked for "Autos Only". Best to stay on I-495 (Long Island Expressway).
Hope that part of your trip works out for you.

Brad,
Did you ever make down to the Cape? I hope you are enjoying New England.

Didn't make the Cape, we enjoyed the New England area though. We had to skip Maine also and we'll make that another trip in itself. Saw lots of beautiful areas and we took our time and didn't use many interstates.
