Raising Trailer

Post by jacandjan on 5/1/2010, 6:34 am

I know I've seen something on here before about raising the trailer using the shackle adjustment but i can't seem to find it now that i need it. I bought a new truck and it sits 3" higher than the old one. I'm going to try to get some of that 3" back with the hitch adjustment but i don't think it will be enough and still maintain 6" or so of clearence between the trailer and the bed rails.

Any advice on lifting the trailer via the shackle adjustment or a link to a previous post about this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks........Jim

Bobby from NC did it with help of his father. I lost his web site and he has pictures of how they did the job. I think the last name is Daniels.

Jim: Are your brackets like this:

This is how I was able to raise our 5th wheel trailer

Frank:

Yes, the center bracket looks something like that and the other ends of the springs have 3 holes for adjusting. So would i have to change all 3 spots or just change the adjustment on the ends ? Right now it looks like everything is as low as it will go. I don't know how much of a difference ther is between the West Coast and East Coast models when it comes to this. I also have 16 " wheels.

On a side note, i did lower my Reese hitch to it's lowest point (about 2" lower) and to my surprise i was pretty level and had 6 1/2 " of clearance on the bed rails. We do some off road camping so I'm not sure if this will be enough to keep me out of trouble or not, I had about 9" or 10 inches before i switched trucks.

If you move the springs, move at all 3 locations the same, front, center, and back

The center "flex" point only has 2 holes (like yours) while the shackles have 3 holes. I think I only need to move down one hole on the shackles so do I need to move to the lower hole on the center position or leave it as is ?

Would have been nice if Forest River had provided instructions !!

Thanks again.........Jim

Interesting. I just went out and verified mine (Trailair Equaflex). I do not have multiple adjustment holes in the middle; only two of them on each end. I moved my spring bolts to the lower hole on each end (center not adjustable) to gain an inch or so.

Mine only had the two spot on each mounting bracket. I do not know about moving the center one spot and the others to the 3rd spot
