Thermostat question

Post by Minty on 4/25/2010, 9:13 am

Hey folks,
I am making a to do list already and I do not even have my new rig. As a matter of fact it is around 8-10 weeks away still. But I have seen some one put in a Hunter style thermostat in the rig. But I am wondering if a Noma that I purchased at Canadian Tire here in alberta. We are currently using one just like it in our home but I but another for the garage but it wwill not work with a radiant heater.. Can you tell me if I can make it work with the system. The new rig is a Wildcat 32 QBT.. I am not sure what is in there but am pretty sure that I am going to want to change it out anyway....

Thanks
James

I cannot comment on the specific thermostat you have; however, I can tell you that many brands of thermostats will work fine. Hunter just happens to be carried at WalMart and many of us have used it. Any standard heat/cool thermostat should work.

James,

Since our A/C units have a two speed motor, you're probably going to have to install a switch in the thermostat to control that feature. All of us that have used the Hunter have had to do that. I'm not sure that there is a digital thermostat that comes with the two speed switch already installed.

There are some very good posts on this forum that will tell you exactly which wires to use and how to install the switch.

I saved my old thermostat and if I ever trade this Cat in, I'm going to take my Hunter with me.

Best of luck in your project.

Hi James and welcome to the forum.

I didn't use a Noma but I did use this Honeywell that I purchased from Canadian Tire (no longer on their website, but Home Depot has it). I found a document online that details the wiring... send me a PM if you are interested and I'll email it to you. I did install the switch as described in the Hunter instructions, however this just controls the high and low speed fan for the air, so if you always have it on high, you could get away without doing this step.

Not to hijack this or anything, and I've asked this before...

But I need/want a controller that will turn on the furnace at night,
when the temps drop down into the 50's, and the air during the day,
when the inside temps run up into (or at least try) the 90's.

I get tired of jumping up/down to reset everything twice a day. Or worse only once.

You simply need a thermostat that has "auto" as one of the system choices. System choices should be off/heat/cool/auto. I use them in my microwave buildings. You will set both a heat and cool setting; in the auto position, the thermostat will switch between heating/cooling as required.

Should wire up the same.

yel=cool (connect to "Y")
wht=heat (connect to "W")
grn=gnd (connect to "RH & RC")
brn=fan lo (connect to one side of double throw switch)
blu=fan hi (connect to other side of double throw switch)
connect common terminal of double throw switch to "G"

The switch controls fan hi & lo.

This one should work.
