Fifth wheel in Tow Vehicle

Post by Minty on 4/25/2010, 8:38 am

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to take a second and say hi. I am just getting into the wonderful world of towing a fifth wheel. Well as I speak we have made our order from the Indiana Plant. What we ordered was a 32QBT. And as I have never towed a fifth wheel, I dont want to have any issues so I am trying to do things in order as I have around 8-10 weeks before it gets here. What my inquiry is the hieght of my hitch. I am driving a 2004 Dodge 3500 drw CTD 5.9l. The hitch that I am going to put in is the Reese Elite(Formerly Signature) with under bed pucks. Any idea as what I am to set the hitch height to. I am a little worried that the trailer will sit too high or the trailer sit too close to the bed sides.. Sorry it seems I am rambling just really excited ..

Thanks
James

to the forum. You will most likely need to adjust the hitch after you get the new 5er . Jim

Minty, Welcome to the forum, Jim&Diane73 is right you will most likely have to adjust the height once you have the 5er. Your dealer should be able to help with this. When we had our hitch installed our dealer said that around 6" off the bed rails was ideal, but ours ended up a little over 7" to get everything towing level.

Sounds like you will have the 5er for the summer season, when we ordered ours it was the slowest 8 weeks ever. Just Kidding :)

welcome welcome welcome welcome welcome welcome to the forum. Congrats on your new trailer. I have to agree with waiting until your rig is delivered. I have a similar hitch and there is plenty of room for height adjustments....

James,

You didn't say, but will the dealer be installing the hitch or will you have the work done somewhere else? If the dealer installs it, he should adjust it for you so that the Cat tows level or just slightly nose high. If you have the work done elsewhere, ask the dealer to adjust it for you. After all, you're spending some hard earned $$$$$ on the trailer. You might wind up spending a few more to get the hitch adjusted, but the dealer's good will might see you through.

BTW, welcome to the forum and the very best of luck with your new Cat.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am ordering the rig from the US and I live in Alberta so the dealer won't adjust but I have a contact that works at a truck accessory shop and we trade labour for stuff like that . The bad thing is that my buddy and I are traveling 6 hours to get the rig in Montana so may have to bring some tools to adjust ourselves.. I am hoping that I can get an about measurement from FR and then go from there. Also hoping that I am not have to adjust the trailer axles as well .. All I got to say is with the 04 Dodge diesel dually I won't have problem getting it home...

Welcome Minty, Take some tools with you, if you only have to adjust the pin box on the camper you and your buddy could do that pretty quick. If you wear your skirt you might could get some help from the construction crew up the street,,,,,

Be safe on your trip.
