Rod Batts comes through again

Post by scottz on 4/18/2010, 10:12 am

I recently had a problem with my fresh water tank. The straps holding it in place rubbed a hole in it. I contacted Rod to see if FR had a better mounting solution and to buy a new tank. He sent me a new tank and a new mounting kit; no charge. That is great service on a unit that is almost three years old.

Thanks Rod.

PS: I have not had time to put it in yet; I'll take photos when I do so you guys can see how it works.

Be sure to check the self tapping screws that hold the underbelly on in the corners where your tank is. The screws on mine were too long and the screws wore holes into the tank.

I remembered that; at first I thought that was my problem. But, no, mine had a hole rubbed in the tank from the metal straps that go under. The original tank was held up by flanges at the top that slipped over rails, and the straps that went under the tank. When full of water the tank bulged on the bottom and rubbed the straps. What it needs (if I could have done it before the hole) was to put a piece of plywood between the straps and the tank to support the bottom of the tank (no bulging).

The new tank does not have flanges for the top suppports. FR sent some new angle iron supports that go under the tank; no straps. I have not really looked at it yet, but I will still probably put a piece of plywood between the tank and the new supports. I'll let you know.

Great news! Rod has always been great when I needed his help too. I also had a problem with our fresh water tank - one of the screws holding the underbelly material to the frame was installed through the frame into the tank itself. Took a little while to notice since the screw held tight, but eventually the water came dripping out. New tank, no charge.

I placed wood strips between the metal straps and the tank, my thought was to keep the metal from rubbing on the plastic tank. So far it worked, but it's only been a year.

I also added a fresh water tank support.

That support is just what you need.

Also had the same problem as others with a screw rubbing through the fresh water tank. Seems like a common story but maybe I should have contacted Rod as well but it still ended up costing about $20 for the tank repair and my time to remove and re-install the tank. Did add two more straps because of the severe bow in the tank when filled, just didn't seem right that it had that much sag.

When you all replaced your tanks/repaired them, how did you get the underbelly away from the frame?

Mine is tucked up somehow at the very end by the bumper, and I've been chicken to try and pull it out.

I cut it near the top of the rear frame rail. Apparently, they attached the underbelly to the top of the rear frame member before they put the floor on the cat. I could not see any way to get it out. I put it back with screws & washers. I think the only other option is to take it loose beginning at the front of the trailer and pull the whole thing off.
