superglide capture plate

Post by crazymcs on Sat Apr 17, 2010 6:05 am

I just had the hitch installed 2 days ago. I had to install the capture plate on the pin box. When you install it it is only one set screw that holds it on. I cant believe thats it. The dealer who installed it said it doesnt hold any weight is this true for this hitch set up. I cant believe a set screw and a nylon block hold it on. Any info would be great.

You only need the screw to hold the plate to the pinbox when not being used. When being used, the pin weight is more than enough to keep the plate where it needs to be, between the pinbox and the hitch head.

We have a superglide on our 2010 Cat and the dealer installed capture plate is like the one you describe. Wondered about it also, but it has worked without a problem.

I bet everyone here said the same thing when they saw how the quick connect plate attaches, I thought man I am placing my entire fifth wheel on the strength of 4 set screws. Then after really understanding how it works the capture plate is not used to hold the king pin, merely it adds the needed spline to capture the turning mechanism that allows the hitch to move back and forward. The king pin is held in place by the locking jaw assembly which completely goes around the pin, other hitches have split jaws. In my opinion this is a great hitch system, you will find it is easy to use and maintenance is minimal, but required. I have found only one draw back, to hook up or unhook you almost need to be inline with the cat I have not had any problems personally with this but if you are in a tight spot it could make it difficult.

I had to get a Universal Capture Plate. It was a pain to put on,welding and such(took 3 hours) not really bad but time consuming. hooked up a winch and pulley system to lift and take out hitch of the truck. not bad with 2 people but hefty alone.

I've never had a fiver or even looked that close at the mechanism.
That being said, I thought I'd regail you with the story of a freind of mine who bought a brand new Montana fiver and had the dealer install the hitch. The husband questioned something about how the latching mechanism was secured. Dealer assured him it was fine and that they were all that way.
15 miles down the road the trailer broke loose. $10K in damage to the truck and $3K to the Montana which stayed with the truck thankfully. Eventually the hitch manufacturer paid for all damages and admitted there were parts missing.
Moral of the story - If it doesn't make sense to you, question it until it does.
