It Smelled Like .........

Post by schrowang on 4/15/2010, 3:07 pm

Well it did! I spent the last week trying to analyze and cure a really bad sewer odor at the front of the trailer. The odor would fill the bedroom and the livingroom each night. Tried the following:

1. flushed (3 times) and sanitized the bedroom gray water tank.
2. flushed (3 times) and sanitized the galley gray water tank.
3. flushed (w/ wand type flusher) and sanitized the black water tank.
4. checked each of the holding tank vents for blockage (none apparent).

All to no avail. Still had the odor and it was getting worse.

Did I have a leak in one of the tanks which was soaking the belly insulation? Checked (no leak).

Workamper neighbor's patience is running very thin by now.

BUT ...........

As I was putting the various cleaning paraphenalia away last night (front storage bin) I could still smell the odor. And then my hand brushed the plastic cover over the battery housing. It was hot. Hmmmmmmmm.

Yes, my 4 year old battery (PowerMax, hetche en Mexico) had two cells go bad and what I was smelling was the rotten egg odor of sulpher coming from the dying battery. Funny thing is that about a month ago I fully watered the battery with distilled water. Oh well, it was 4 years old and was made south of the border.

Pulled the battery on the spot, went to Sears this AM and got a DieHard and installed it.

NO MORE ODOR.

The moral to this story is that sometimes when you hear hoofbeats, it is a Zebra not a horse.

Glad you found the problem. I am very surprised that the odor came into the cat and not out the vent. Or was it going out the vent and coming back in?

Yeah, come to think of it, there was probably alot of hydrogen gas evaporating into the atmosphere. And my neighbor smokes.

BTW, another thing that I checked was the charger side of the converter. No problem there.
