Hard to say for sure if you need the slider or not without knowing your equipment. My Wildcat has a factory extended pin box and the newer Cats have an angled nose. Couple that with the sloped corners of my 08 chevrolet and I haven't had to use my slider yet even though I have a shortbed. It is nice knowing I have it should the need arise but as of yet it has not been needed.

I've had my Husky 16K w/ slider since 2000. It's been in two trucks and towed two different 5'ers. The only time I've had to use the slider is with the 2000 Trail Harbor 28RKLS. It had pretty sharp, protruding corners on the front. I've never had to use it with the Cat.
But, I agree that it's nice to have, just in case. If I were purchasing new w/ a short bed truck, I'd still go with the slider.
JMHO ..... and outta here!
