Outer Banks, NC
Anyone recommend a campground on the Outer Banks of NC?
Were were going to stay at Ocean Waves campground near Rodanthe but they are booked the week we can get away. Matter of fact, they are booked solid from early June through August! Darn work always gets in the way of having fun!

We stayed at Camp Hatteras a couple of years ago and thought it was quite nice. It's in the Rodanthe/Waves area also.

Mountainman,
There appears to be a host of good CG's up and down the coast on the outer banks. We stayed for 4 days at the KOA in Rodanthe in 2004. It was a well kept, friendly CG. Friends stayed there last fall and from what they said it hasn't changed.
Best of luck.

Been at the KOA due to Ocean Waves not being available. Ocean Waves is always first choice. The KOA had gravel sites (not sure if they still do, it's been a few years) but was nice.

We are going here for Memorial Day weekend with some friends. We have not been there ourselves, but the couple we are going with went there last year. They said it is much cheaper than the KOA.

Sorry you could not go to Ocean Waves. We go to the Outer Banks every spring and stay there. Was there just a week ago.

How COOL is that!! Great pics bdaniel!!
I'm bound and determined to get to N.C some day! It's like New Mexico...there's so much variation to each part of the state, you have to see it ALL to truly appreciate it. At least that's what I've been told...by VERY reliable sources.

From MM 0 at the NC/TN border to its end in Wilmington, NC, Interstate 40 stretches over 400 miles across some of the most diverse geography in the U.S.
Here in the western mountains we have Mount Mitchell which, at 6,800' + is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi. Other ranges regularly top 5,000' and where we are in the Swannanoa Valley we sit at 2,400' ASL.
As you move east the land rapidly drops away to 500' and you're in the piedmont region. Farther east are the sand hills known for their pine forests and then finally you come to the coastal regions.
NC is quite a state and we've been lucky enough to spend time in it.

Thanks for the replies fellas and for the pics Bobby. Made us look forward to the trip even more.
The Outer Banks does seem to be a very popular place this year.

We'll be staying at Camp Hatteras June 12 through 19. (I'll be sure to check out Ocean Waves while there.)
We decided to stay on the sound side of the island. Going to rent a Jet-ski for sure!
Any recommendations for sites to see or good seafood?

MountainMan, we also stayed on the sound side and found it very quiet. We stayed on one of the premeir sites along the water. Have a look at this map... I can't make out the site number, but it was the site right behind the 2 birds and with the big "front yard".
Be sure to check out the Hatteras Lighthouse as well as a day trip to Orcrcoke Island.

Looks like a great site Jeff! We are also on the waterfront but they didn't give me a site number yet.
The Hatteras Lighthouse and Ocracoke Island are on our "to do" list.
Thanks.

All packed up and ready to roll toward the OBX tomorrow. Going to drive halfway (somewhere around Charlottsville, VA) and find a cheap or free overnight. Then heading on in Saturday morning.
I may even talk the wife into a night or two in the blueridge mountains on the way back. I think I'll take a fly rod just in case.

When you get to Okracoke, you have to hit Howards Pub. I had a great Blackened Tuna Steak Sandwich on Memorial Day. It is one of the first places you come to after you leave the ferry. it will be on your right hand side.
