Who's Converted From 15" to 16" rims and tires?

Post by schrowang on 3/25/2010, 3:44 pm

Who has converted from the OEM 15" ST225/75R-15D's to 16" rims and LRE tires. Looks the the 16" combo would be a tire about 30" in diameter. Gonna measure tomorrow, but it doesn't sound like alot of gain over the 15" rims.

What was your experience doing the conversion and how happy are you?

Thanks for the feedback.

Camping FT and loving it.

I purchased my rv used and had been converted to 16" rims and tires already. Going with the 16 gives you more of a tire selection at least here locally. Some of my buddies still have 15's and they can only find a couple different tires with the required load ratings locally.

We ordered our WC with 6000 lb. axles and 16" wheels and tires, because of the higher load capacity. Our old 5er had 15" wheels and did not ride as smooth as our WC with 16's.

Mike,

There are charts on the net that you plug in the size tires you have and the size you want and it compares them for you.

Here is a comparison I did:

Tire Size Comparison
Specification....Sidewall....Radius....Diameter....Circumference....Revs/Mile....Difference
225/75-15...........6.6in....14.1in......28.3in...........88.9in............713.............0.0%
235/75-16...........6.9in....14.9in......29.9in...........93.9in............675.............5.6%
235/80-16...........7.4in....15.4in......30.8in...........96.8in............655..............8.9%

(had to put the ... in to keep the numbers from running together)

Here is the link, go to the bottom....

The only problem is the bolt pattern on the older units with 4 3/4 bolt. Was willing to spend but it is all for not. 2002 30RLKS doesn't fit the requirements. Sub standard AXLES.

I installed LT215/85R16 E. Tires & wheels from Discount Tire. I went to 16's so I could get a better tire selection. I'm glad I did it have not had any problems.
