Scare lights

Post by driverguy on 3/20/2010, 11:58 am

Hello all, just bought a 2003 28BH. Have been going through it to check everything out and haven't found a switch to operate the scare lights. Right inside the door is a panel with 3 light switches. One is for the porch light, one is for the living area lights, the third I haven't found to work anything. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

On my 29RLBS that 3rd switch is for the scare lights. It does both at the same time. I'm going to figure a way to isolate the driver's side light and switch it seperately. Just gotta find the time and the right wires in the ceiling above the bathroom.

We have the 28RK and the 3rd one on ours is also the scare light. I'm thinking the 3 switch set-up is standard on all Wildcats.

It's possible you've either got a bulb issue or a switch issue. Either one should be easy enough to fix.

On mine the right side scare light switch is by the door in a three switch gang. The left side scare light is next to the commode room door.

I stand corrected in assuming all Wildcats were the same in this regard. Still probably either a bulb or a bad switch though.

Thank you for the replies. I figured that switch was probably supposed to be for the scare lights, but I thought I would ask before I started troubleshooting. I imagine I will have more questions in the future.

That is probably it. I would pull the switch down and check for source voltage, then switched voltage. Good luck.

I took down the inner housing for the water closet fan to get a look at where the wires for the scare light are. Had to use a mirror and a flashlight to try and get a look, but haven't had any luck so far due to all the insulation in the way. Gonna try again when I get a day off here at the CG. Once I find the wires, it shouldn't be too much trouble to lengthen them and put a switch in, maybe on the wall outside the water closet.

Mike,
We'd be interested in what your come up with. Would love to have the driver's side scare light on a different switch.

Funny, mine were on seperate switches and I joined them together so I dont have to turn on one scare light in order to have the porch light on. I guess they should put all the wires someplace handy so we can make them do what we wan't!

Well, just for the record, in my Cat, the three switches at the door panel are for 1) inside main lights, 2) step light, and 3) door scare light. The switch for my slide side (drivers side) scare light is on the bathroom wall with the bathroom light switch.

The "scare" light on the slide side of my unit is pretty well useless in my opinion. It is located between the main and bed slides. When both slides are out, the area lighted on that side of the trailer is very minimal. The slides block the light to most of the area. Our unit has a separate switch for each of the two scare lights on the main switch panel.

I have the same problem. Light is located between 2 slides. Not much use. How did they get the name scare lights.

Don't know the reason. Maybe you turn them on if you hear a strange noise outside and get scared.

Re: Scare lights

Post by Pamato on 3/21/2011, 2:39 pm

I was able to get this to work in my cat. I found that FR wired from the switch at the door to the slide side light and then back to the door side. I found the wires above the radio in a small hole but with enough slack to pull down and cut. The wire on the switch for the on postion (mine was red with whit tracer) I cut in the radio compartment along with the positive feed to the door side and tied together with a jumper added in to feed a new switch. the door switch controls the door side light but also is a master for the slide side. I added the switch in between the audio inputs in the tv cabinet and then feed the positive to the slide side light to the new switch. I know it is mouthfull and reading the post I do agree that no WC comes of the line wired the same. I also redid all the cable connections will post on that later. Good luck in getting worked out.

On mine they are wired on different switches on the control panel. They were labled DOOR SIDE and OFF DOOR SIDE.

We have the 3-switch panel under the cabinets at the back. Switch nearest the door is the porch/step lights, the other two switches are the two scare lights (one on each side of the trailer) and the overhead interior lights. Separate from the 3-switch panel (just a few inches closer to the door) is a single switch for the slides.

Just a little comment here....when we ordered the Wildcat, the order confirmation included "2 scare lights." When it delivered, there were NO scare lights. There is an itty bitty dim little porch light. That's it. (Dealer commented that FR reserved the right to make in line production changes at any time.)

Given their liberty to change things at any time, I might even guess that if someone has your exact model the switches might have been different anyway.

Glad you figured out it was the bulbs driverguy!

JBS,
If the order confirmation said there were 2 scare lights, I think it should have been delivered with 2 scare lights. FRs right to make in line production changes should be on UNordered merchandise, otherwise, they could change out or leave out all sorts of things. I hope you made a big stink about it.

I had things added and shorted on my factory order. Dealer refused to do anything about it. FR said they had the right to make changes without notice and so on. So I dropped it and moved on. Wasn't worth my time and money to get a lawyer. All of the add on items were sweet and some of the shorted items I really didn't care about. I did want my floor safe and WC pillows that they shorted me.

Tater Thats how mine were on the wall by the entrence door. Mid door in a 31QBS. I just found it extremly annoying to my neighbor when you want to use the door side scare light. It took some time to figure out what FR did but if the time spent helps another WC owner then well worth the time.

That was my point to the dealer. I asked why it was possible for a purchase order to be accepted and acknowledged by the manufacturer stating all packages and add ons if it wasn't going to be honored. No where did it say "wish list." As a manufacturer, go ahead and change things that aren't specifically stated on a purchase order. I think those type of changes are covered in their fine print but not the itemized things on a purchase order.

I'm also stuck with a propane only water heater. Silly me thought all 6 gallon RV hot water tanks were able to run on either electric or propane. Lesson learned.
