directv ???????????

Post by rdsknfn_57 on 3/18/2010, 2:05 am

My daughter moved out last month leaving me with an extra reciever, i have a extra dish, so i ordered a tripod last week. I went out yesterday and hooked them up in the 5er and they worked great. While doing the intial set up it ask for your zip code ( where you are currently at ) in order to set the elevation and the tilt, after setting that all i had to do was was turn the dish left to right to find the signal. MY question is for those that do this, do you punch in the zip code where you are at or do you just gamble and look until you find it ??. I do have signal finder meter.

We don't reset the zip code. Scruffy is getting very good at setting it up.... he just uses a compass to find South and turns it a bit to find the signal. With it set on our zip code, we don't get local channels, but, we get our home weather on the weather channel. Scruffy also has a way to get cable TV AND direct TV at the same time, so if the park cable has local channels, we can get them. If a campground doesn't have cable, we can get local channels on our TV with a digital converter. Someday we'll get a new TV that doesn't need a digital converter.

We have Dish. After saying that I usually didn't bother to do anything with the zip code. On our set all that does is tell you where the satellite should be magnetically from you. I used another little program, found at www.arachnoid.com/satfinder which does the same thing but better, to find the satellite. I also used a meter.

With Dish I can call tech support and get the box reprogrammed to the location I'm at, I do this twice a year now since we travel between Alaska and Arizona with two boxes. In the past when we were spending the fall/winter/spring driving down the eastern coast I fibbed and told them I'd taken a short term job in New Jersey and gave them a zip code for a RV park there. This enabled us to watch the local New York City stations all the way to Florida. Interesting things happen in NYC...

Mark, I go all over the coast and never change anything. I set it to my home zip. I use that as my starting point. I do not live very far from you. I use the signal strenght that is on the dish setup. Just turn on the tv go to setup. Takes 2min.

I was wondering when someone would ask.

Connect the Direct TV coax to the IN on the street (sewer) side of the trailer. Hook-up everything inside as you normally would for Direct TV (no jumper cable). Connect the park cable coax to the OUT on the curb (awning) side of the trailer. We have a red/white/yellow cable that goes from the Direct TV box to the back of the TV, and a yellow cable that goes from the Concertone to the back of the TV. All Scruffy does, is plug in whichever we want to watch to the back of the TV. Actually, he can leave the red/white plugged in all the time. All he switches out are the two yellows... and turns on either the Direct TV box or the Concertone. He's going to get some sort of switch to put on the back of the TV (AB switch), and then the cables can be plugged in at the same time, and all he has to do is move the switch - heck, I could even do that.

i set mine up so i don't have to change any connections to watch cable, ontop 5er antena or sat. The cable connection runs threw the digital box, as long as the box is off the cable works fine. the digital box works by switching the concertone to imput one,( imput 1 red, white yellow) the box will work without the concertone but the sound from the tv is very faint, I added a 2nd outside connection to connect the sat. which is hooked up to the imput 2 using red, white yellow which also has to go threw the concertone on imput 2. everything works ok, going on a 2 week trip starting on the 25th , we don't watch alot tv when camping unless it's bad weather and we are stuck inside but it's nice to know it will work when i want it to.

I helped a friend setup his direct tv last year. We mounted a small 1" compass on the tripod. Got the signal dialed in and mounted the compass pointing due north. Now all he does is set up the dish line up the compass and ready to go with very little if any adjustment. It takes longer to screw the anchor in the ground.

Thanks- I am pretty good when it comes to dialing in the dish but what I dont understand is where are you putting the dish and the reciever? I would imagine that you hook the dish into the sewer side but where do you put the box? Does the dish back feed the signal into the camper to hit the box? Or does the box have to go outside right after the dish-then into the cox connection on the camper? I hope I my question is clear..thanks so much !!

I don't have it in our Cat, but I believe the box goes inside the entertainment center, then hook up to the TV. One of the more knowledgeable ones will answer with proper wiring.

The box goes in the camper at your tv. You connect the dish cable outside just like if you was hooing into park cable. The difference comes inside. For park cable you have a jumper at your entertainment center for it to work. For satellite you disconnect the jumper and run the input (Bottom I think) to your satellite box and then run the output on your box either to the tv or to the top jumper connection. I don't have my satellite since I got my cat so I am not 100% on the output connection. I am sure one of the others can clarify. I know the input side is correct.

Good Luck

JIMMYTITAN44, Inside my cat i have 2 imputs underneath my tv. The 1st imput is where my digital box is connected for the antena on top. The 2nd imput is for my directv. I added a second outside connection, so that i would not have to switch cables around inside. The park cable feeds through the digital box, as long as the box is turned off, the park cable works fine, when i turn on the digital box i switch to imput 1 for the outside antena. For satellite i switch to imput 2. The digital box and satellite both are connected by using the red, white and yellow cords. For the satellite i use a 50' or a 100' cable to get the sat. dish out from under any trees.
