Storage Mods
When were were in Leesburg, Florida, in January we stopped at Pat's Sales and bought 4 cabinet doors. Three were previously used and dirty, and one was new and unfinished. One of the used ones had a glass panel. Total for all 4 plus tax was under $35.

Here are before and after photos. The new unfinished door had the best match. The color of the others looks better in person than in the photos.

Space between this panel and the kitchen drawers was just big enough to store bug stuff.

The open space above the fridge is an ideal place to store cereal, crackers and other boxed items.

We'll put a shelf inside this "new" cabinet in the bedroom. I can already imagine a 15" flat screen TV mounted to this door.
I'll put bigger, more detailed photos of each project in our Picasa site (in signature below) in the next couple of days.

Re: Storage Mods
I like the shallow cabinets next to the drawers. I may have to figure out if that will work for us too.
Am going to bring the Cat home next week. We might have one last snow event to deal with this coming weekend. Hopefully will be done then.
Will start my long list of mods. Probably take all summer to get them all done. Oh well. No hurry I guess.

Re: Storage Mods
We're very happy with the narrow cabinet. But, if we were to sell our Cat and get another, I don't think Scruffy would want to put in another cabinet. It was very difficult. He's right handed, but he had to do all of the back side work left handed. Fortunately, he has a drill bit that is magnetic and has a cylinder on the bit that holds the screw in place. Also, much of the work was blocked from sight, so he did a lot by feel. At one point it was a two person job. When he was screwing the "L" brackets to the main cabinet, I had to hold the side boards in place from the front side.
Obviously, it isn't impossible.

Re: Storage Mods
Love the shallow cabinet idea!!
That spot has always been a sore area for me because it seems like the thin laminate panel always seens to get pushed in and I have had to refasten it twice. Having a solid door would solve that problem and add some storage.
Being a cabinet maker, I will see if I can devise a way to make the installation easier and relay the findings to the rest of the group.

Re: Storage Mods
We used the thin panel for the back of the cabinet. As it was, we would have had to cut it into pieces to get it out, if we wanted to. As an afterthought, we should have taken a little time to remove the drawer hardware and the thin panel between the drawers and undersink area.
While your studying this mod to try to make it easier, how about having a look at the area under the entertainment center. We'd like to make a cabinet that would hold one or two 12-packs of soda pop. Thanks.

A good place to store your soda pop or adult beverage is to build a shelf in the trash compartment under the trash can if you aren't using it for something else. Jim
