New Tire Suggestions (and a new truck to brag on!)

Post by Deanna on 3/15/2010, 12:35 pm

First topic message reminder :

Hello Everyone,

Am planning my first big outing w/ the Cat in April, and would like to replace the tires. Any suggestions? Also, I'm guessing that would also be a good to repack the wheel bearings? And...the battery died last fall after being plugged in for several months (duh....). I'm assuming I need to replace rather than try to charge it?

Speaking of which, what do you think of the Battery Tender? I think I could use one.

Now, about the truck. I just traded for a 2005 Chevy Silverado 3500, dually, diesel, 4WD, crew cab. I seriously love this truck. No more sliding hitches...yippee! And as luck would have it, it had a B&W gooseneck hitch on it. I understand I can get the 5th wheel hitch to replace the gooseneck ball. I've heard good things about B&W...have you?

Am also think of vinyl planks, and am wondering how anyone else covered the front of the slide. Pics would be great.

Thanks for your help. Happy travelin'...

Anyone have any experience with the Interco trailer tires? They have a good rep in the offroad segment and they have started making a trailer tire line but I have yet to come across anyone running them.

Have not looked up the thread but a few years back (07/08) there was a lot of conversation about how poor Carlisle tires were. Some trailers were coming out with them stock and they were blowing right off the lot. So would be leery of Carlisle.

I think Oldelmer1 can run the same story by you also. So in my MHO, you don't have to have a 200 dollar tire. the china tire will go just as far if you want to save a few bucks. Yea it bites that they're made in china.

I'm sticking with my 15" tires also.

My TowMaster's are dated 4505, which means 45 week of 2005. I have pulled my camper around the USA the 2nd month I bought it. I have to admit, my tires have close to 20K on them and no problems. I don't cover them, but I do spray F21 on them. I always check the pressure, now I have the Pressure Pro monitor, and I never go over 65 MPH. I would probably buy them again if I can find them.

But, I don't think you can go wrong with the MAXXIX, but be sure your rims can handle the higher pressure, mine are only rated to 65PSI.

Tom, thats great new on your towmaster tires. FR put Transmasters on mine and hopefully mine will last as long as yours have.

How do I find out what pressure the rims are rated? Is it stamped on the rim somewhere? (Great...already ordered the tires!).

Bill,

Just be anal about your tire pressure(65PSI) and speed(under 65MPH) and hopefully, you'll be fine.

Deanna,

There is a code stamped into the back of the rim. I'd go out and look at my spare, but I cant get to it as I have a cast on my foot.

Ouch...bet there's a story about that cast....

Thanks for the info on the rims. If it ever quits raining here, I will see if I can find that number on the rim.

Wondering about this made me do a Google search, and that, of course, led to even more questions.

Like this--if a tire is rated at 80 psi, I'm assuming that is maximum pressure. Does that mean if the rims are rated at 65, that you can run that tire at 65? Seems it might make the tire too soft and not safe. ???

Was climbing on a ladder and now my achilles tendon is inflamed. Getting old, I guess....

Anyhow, YES, I believe you are correct in your question/answer. I would guess you could go 70PSI on the tire/rim combo.

But, technically, you should weigh your camper and adjust your tire pressure from there.

But, I would think 70 to 75 PSI on our campers would be just fine. But will the rims be OK??, I guess, but I don't know.

Then again, if you are going to buy new rims to hold the 80PSI, should you upgrade to 16 inch rims/tires???

Good question. I ordered the tires from the local Chevy dealer (they had the best price). I've dealt with these guys many times and trust them. The parts manager is an avid 5th Wheeler and we talk camping a lot. However, we did not talk about rim size. He has a large Jayco Eagle, 4 slides, and probably 16" rims, so he may not have thought about the rim size issue for these tires.

I will talk to him on Monday and get his take on the situation. Thanks!

On my 15" rim it is stamp on the rim inside about 80 psi. You will have to get down and go under the camper or remove a tire to look at the rim. If you have the white rims I think it is stamp on the inside of the rim.
