Laminate flooring.

Post by azandy700 on 3/15/2010, 1:49 am

Hi all,

I would like to install laminate flooring in our Cat where the vinyl floor is on the ground level.
I used to install laminate and other flooring in homes for quite a few years till my knees stopped working well. Have any of you done this in your Cat? I am concerned about the slide going over it.
Also, laminate flooring is meant to float. I would much rather it didn't here. Have any of you decided to glue it down with something?

I probably can't put it on the slide area as there would not be a good way to finish it off. There would be a tripping point if I just put a reducer there. Any ideas?
I will just replace the carpet there if I have to. The store I used to work for can bind the new edge.
Thanks

I think I'd try the vinyl wood planks.

http://www.lowes.com/pd_33259-84875-WD4011_4294856531_4294937087?productId=3032606&Ns=p_product_price|1&pl=1&currentURL=/pl_Vinyl%2BFlooring%2Band%2BAccessories_4294856531_4294937087_

The laminate hates water. its really tuff other wise but as much potential as there is for water coming in at some point, you'd probably have a warped up mess with laminate.

I'd stay with vinyl. find the thickest, best quality, and be done with it. they make the big rolls with some nice wood looks, and the vinyl wood planks they have now.

I love the look of the vinyl woodgrain planks. If we did that kind of mod, we'd probably go with the planks.

I remembered someone doing this a few years ago. Went back to the old forum and found pictures. Dave Martinez put laminate into his 29rlbs.

He is a member here, but hasn't been on the forum since Sept. 08.

Go to the old forum, http://wildcatonline.com/picupload/pictures.asp

and scroll down till you see Dave's name and open up his pictures.

You could try sending him a PM and maybe he will get an e-mail from the forum and reply back to you.

I 2nd the Admin's post. Laminate hates water, but I'm sure you already know that. In the end the Vinyl look a like will hold up better to RV living. Plus, other factor is possibly weight?? Vinyl flooring will keep the weight down a little more, but I'm a weight concious kinda guy I guess!~ :)

I didn't think about the weight, That would be a huge factor to think about.

Thanks all for your help. I do realize water is bad for laminate. Never thought of it though. I never thought of vinyl plank either. This would be a glued down product and much thinner than laminate. Might be better.
Thanks again

At least the laminate planks would allow for easy repair if needed.

I have a lot of hardwood/laminate flooring that I have taken out of my house that I am going to put in the WC this summer. We both like the feel of this under our feet. He is a link with some detail. http://www.modmyrv.com/2008/08/05/rv-laminate-flooring

Check out the vinyl wood flooring Home Depot sells - it comes in strips that have adhesive to connect the planks to each other. It floats on the floor. In reality, it is two vinyl pieces glued to each other and offset with adhesive to connect multiple pieces together. I think it is called Allure at Home Depot. It was $1.79/sq ft. and is waterproof.

Yes, it's me!

I did indeed install the laminate flooring and it is still holding up just fine although their are a few scratches from slide out drag. At the time, the vinyl plank was not available and I have seen a few installs of this product and would recommed it but make sure to float the floor product per manufacturer directions. This type of flooring as well as wood laminate needs to expand and contract and will because of the varying temps in the trailer. The one really good benefit of the vinyl is the thickness which will be comparable with the original and you will be able to install over the existing floor where the wood laminate needs to have the original flooring removed and there will likely be a weight difference as the vinyl is lighter.
As with everything, new products come along and then we wish we had taken another route but we still like the wood laminate and the color really blended in with the cabinets. Also, because of our climate, we have yet to have any issues with moisture and have not had the problems with sildeout leakage like so many have but thanks to the forum, repairs can be made.

Did I mention, its great to be back!!
