Campground review Yellowstone

Post by azandy700 on 3/9/2010, 11:08 am

I'm wondering if I can get some real reviews for our trip out West this summer. I used the review site in question and they said all is great.
Just wondering if anyone has stayed at the two main CG we are staying at.

Mt Rushmore KOA South Dakota

Rocky Mountain RV Park. Montana. Right outside the North entrance of Yellowstone.

Minneapolis NW KOA. Minnesota. We are staying here for a few days for a family function.

Any help would be great.

We have stayed several times at the Mt Rushmore KOA. Great location, very nice campground. They have tour bus to Rushmore and Crazy horse, also in Hill City try the German Restaurant ( its on the corner in a old hotel building) cannot thing of the name. The train ride from Hill City to Keystone is also good, make sure you do the wild life loop, just have fun.

Now that we were there, I would say July is a very busy month. There were sites available at places. I would reserve one though. It seemed that it didn't matter which day of the week it was. A lot of people coming from all over the world. Day of week really didn't seem to change.
I would say if you don't care about which site you get, you'll find stuff in the park. Just not the nice sites or campgrounds.

Go to nps.gov and look at the campgrounds. RV units longer than 30 feet have limited sites available. You can get into some of the sites but are really cramped. I have not been to Norris so don't know specifics, but the web site indicates 7 sites. Many sites in the park are pull outs where you park parallel to the road. If you are longer than the site you will be hanging out in a narrow road.

It is a nice drive from Cody to Norris, but there is a lot of things to see and do along the way. It will take discipline to go straight to the campground. Very likely will take a good half day to reach the campground. If there is any animal activity along the road, there will be "bear, elk, moose, sheep, etc jams" that require patience to get through, especially pulling the "Cat.

Yes it will be crowded in July, but is a great place. Enjoy!!
