More introduction information

Post by Ak Ronnie on 3/1/2010, 7:23 pm

This winter I think the East coast & parts of the South, had more winter than here in Ketchikan, Alaska. However, at the higher elevations, we did get 10-20 feet of snow. We saw more winter in Washington DC in December, didn't have the 27rl 5th wheel, but had no problems with the 4X4. The Wildcat has made several winter trips across the great white north from Alaska to the lower 48 with no problems, but the furnace does not keep up at > -20 F, but an additional electric blanket on the bed makes it comfortable. So if you see a couple with Alaska Plates, in the warm weather, now you know why there so happy.
Being a commercial fisherman, I might be some time between posts as I do not have internet service at sea. Good luck to all and enjoy the Forum.

No I'm not on the Deadliest Catch, but I do fish (Power Troll for Salmon & Longline for Halibut) in some pretty crappy weather at times. Thank you'all for making me feel welcome.

Welcome to the forum. Great people and great information. Now about that Salmon fishing, I go every year to New York on the Salmon River. When is the run out there? I may have to point the cat in your direction.

To answer the Q. when are the salmon runs go to the ADF&G website for specific details. In SE Alaska generally the best times are as follows; King Salmon (late May to Aug), Coho (late June to Oct), Pinks, Chum, & Sockeye (late June to Sept). Generally fish numbers are excellent due to Strict Regulations based on abundance & the release of millions of natural fry & smolts from commercially/sport funded hatcheries. Don't want to get too political, but last year we have seen increased evidence of foreign fishing. I fear with this economic globalization--- this will be the end of the good old days.

Ya, its a pretty place. As a retired marine biologist & process engineer, I think I've got the best office view in America from the back deck of my fishing boat.

I got to agree with you about the views. It is the most beautiful and peaceful places we have ever been. Traveled there 3 times now and I can't get enough. Trying to find a way to go again. But..Ketchikan is the only place where I have seen this!
