Re: Camping in San Diego ?
It depends on where you want to stay.
There's Carlsbad State beach, right on the beach, urban environment.
There's a whole bunch of county parks, my favorite is William Heise near Julian in the mountains. http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/parks/Camping/info.html
There's the desert on the other side of the mountains and I like either Palm Canyon in Anza Borrego State Park, or there is Agua Caliente County Park (only if you don't have a pet).
If you don't mind boondocking, You are allowed to camp in the Anza Borrego State park without paying a fee, but there are a few rules. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=638
Backcountry Camping
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is one of the few California parks that allows open camping throughout its 600,000 acres. There is no charge for this type of camping.
Camp at least 100 feet away from water.
Bring a metal container to hold your fire. Fires built on the ground are NOT permitted and violators wll be cited.
Park on the side of the road, so others may pass, but DO NOT tramle vegetation or drive over geological formations.
Keep a clean camp. Take your trash home with you.
There's an RV resort down in Chula Vista on the bay http://www.chulavistarv.com/
There's also Campland on the bay, on Mission bay, near Sea World. http://www.campland.com/

Re: Camping in San Diego ?
I don't think I'll be much help. Coming from the East, we stop overnight in Yuma - haven't found a place in Yuma that we'd recommend - we just sleep there and leave early in the morning. By staying in Yuma, we avoid the evening rush hour in San Diego, and arrive at Escondido around 11am.
Our son lives in Vista, and there is a campground in Escondido that is very close to his home. It's called Escondido RV Resort. It's kind of pricey, but very nice.... and on top of the hill, we get great reception for Verizon wireless. They are at http://www.escondidorv.com/ . I posted some pics here some time ago - http://www.wildcatcamperforum.com/camp-ground-reviews-f8/ca-escondido-escondido-sunland-rv-resort-t1639.htm?highlight=escondido .

Re: Camping in San Diego ?
Our daughter-in-law mentioned a campground that is run by a veteran's organaization. Maybe VFW. She thinks it has full hookups, and wanted us to look at it last time we were there. We never found the time. The price was extremely reasonable, but I think there was a time limit on how long one could stay. She got info from it from a patient at her former place of business. I'll see if she can remember any details - or the name of the place.

Re: Camping in San Diego ?
I found this website with reviews of campgrounds in the San Diego area. Some are military (active, retired, dod), I don't know if they all are. I clicked on some of the maps - nice overhead satellite views.
