I've been interested in these generators too. I think if I did more boondocking I would probably buy one. As you said, they look good on paper, the price is right, and a big plus is the lighter weight of the generator.

Plus they will fit under my bed cover when I want to close everything up. The one model even has electric start, makes it easier for the wife.

Check out the Champion generator at Costco. I know, it's not the quality of a Honda or a Yamaha (which I'd rather have) but it does put out 3500 watts surge and 3000 watts running. The new ones have a 30 amp breaker and RV plug and they run at 74 db noise level. But for $200 you could replace it every year if you had to! And the Costco warranty is a solid argument...I returned one a couple years ago for full price because the 20 amp breaker wasn't up to the job. Obviously Champion listened and updated the same unit with a 30 amp breaker for us RV'ers.

Kim,
Thanks for your generator recommendation... and for the info about Costco's warranty.
I removed your extra replies, that happens sometimes.

The reason I was really interested was because of the smaller size and weight. We like to close our bedcover when we unhook so everyone cannot see what we have in the bed. If we have full hookups, we won't be needing the generator anyway. Been looking at the Hondas but this one is a lot more bang for the buck.

If it turns out that you buy one of these generators please let us know how you like it.

I bought a 3000 watt generator with a 30 amp outlet. I have not used it on the Cat, our 5ver is in a snow bank.

Re: Any one with experiance
I've had a boliy for 2 seasons. It's okay, but now I have two because I inherted my dad's after 1 season for parts... it's already been back to the manufacturer once for a wiring problem. mine will run my 13.5k btu no sweat, and if its not cycling i can run the water heater at the same time. I can run the microwave and A/C at the same time as long as it's not on defrost and the AC does not cycle.
I will say the honda 2000 is more quiet, and I found that the weight still bothers me but I can do it (I'm not quite 30 so im okay with it). If I had to do it over again, since the A/C in the desert would have to run hours on end to cool things off... i'd just buy a honda and go the mountains on hot days or find me a hookup. My dad's crapped out on him too much, and mine wouldn't work out of the box. I'm pretty mechanically and electrically inclined so I fixed it. I've had to bypass the oil pressure sensor on mine after troubleshooting out in the field one day... Not your average joe genset if you ask me...
I sold a champion before I bought this one cause the champion was to loud for me and the company I keep.
The last genset I doubt will put out 3000 watts for long if at all. Doesn't seem big enough to house a motor with enough HP to do it, but looks like a nice cheaper/smaller unit for charging and maybe running the microwave at half power? I could be wrong!
