Re: Any Musicians on the forum?
To call me a Musician maybe a question mark.
What do I attempt to play? Great Highland Bagpipes
How long have I played? Not long enough
What type of music? Slow Airs
Q. What is worst than one bagpiper playing?
A. Two bagpipers playing
Q. Why do bagpipers always walk when they play?
A. Moving targets are harder to hit.

I LOVE the bagpipes!! I've lost track of how many CDs of bagpipe music I have to listen to.
It's been a dream of mine to learn how to play. I have a chanter, but only know how to play "Going Home". The grace notes are tricky.
During the summer months, a few people gather in the mountains of Wyoming to do some prospecting. One of the fellows gets up early in the morning and plays his pipes for all to hear. You've never properly experienced the pipes until you've heard them echoing through a mountain valley. It's something you'd never forget!

Re: Any Musicians on the forum?
I must say of all the instruments that came to mind when I posted this; The Bagpipes were not one of them.
I'm glad you play Ken! I've not been around any pipe players and only heard them live once or twice. I've always found them to sound pleasant to the ear though.
I'm a guitar player of 30+ years. I've came full circle with my playing. Started playing the acoustic at age 10. Wasn't long until I talked my parents into my first electric guitar. Played electric blues/rock for many years. Played in several garage bands through the years but nothing serious.
I've been back at the start for the last 10 years or so playing acoustic again. I still crank up the electrics every now and again but I reach for the acoustic guitar 99% of the time.
I'm so glad my parents encouraged me as a child to learn an instrument. Long after most sports were gone from my life, I still have music and my guitar. Thats the greatest thing about playing. It last a lifetime and its a continual learning process.
I know there has to be a few other players here...

I will agree with the continual learning process. I started late in life, and play basically for my own enjoyment. I sometimes walk the nature trail, or play at one of the cemeteries, that way I can play to a large group without complaints. Will I ever be a great piper no but one thing about retired life is you get to do the things that you want. So have fun and do or try something different life is short go for it.

I always wanted to play an instrument, but never got around to it.
There is a bagpipe group that plays at Epcot's Canada pavillion. They're called Off Kilter. They've been performing there for years. They aren't as good or energentic as they used to be, but we still enjoy listening to them.

In Pensacola we have a bar that supports the bagpipe band McGuires and seen them play many times. If your in the area make sure you stop by McGuires Irish Pub on Gregory St. they have lots of one dollor bills hanging all over the place. It is a great place to eat also.

I don't blame the banjo pickers for not telling us they play a banjo but there has to be more players than this.
Can't believe nobody plays the wash tub bass. No one even plays the jug or spoons?
What kinda outfit is this anywho?

Theres another guy that I talked to on here awhile back about playing. but he hasn't posted in awhile I don't think. I tried to find the topic we were using but haven't had time to really look for it good.
I had Bill Crook from your neck of the woods build me a paisley tele.
The guy that builds Brad Paisleys - paisley guitars. I just gotta learn some scales and start pick'n some lead.

Re: Any Musicians on the forum?
I've heard of Bill Crooks guitars but I've never played one. I've always been a humbucker guy when it comes to electrics. I have owned a few strats over the years but never a telecaster.
I've always favored Les Pauls, SG's and Paul Reed Smith sound over the single coil Fenders.
I actually own two 1978 Ibanez Les Paul copies that are better than the actual Gibson Les Pauls I've owned. One is a '78 Musician series with a neck-thru design. It was the first electric guitar my parents bought for me and will never be sold or traded. Not only the sentimental value but its simply a butt-kickin' guitar!
The same scales I learned as a 12 year old are the same scales I play from today. Just remember there are only 12 notes on a guitar and they only repeat themselves over and over as you go up the neck. That sounds extremely simple but I've known of many who forget this when learning. (Including myself.) After a while, you will not even think in terms of scales. It will simply become a matter of spaces between frets for the key your playing in. About this same time you'll start recognizing the same notes repeating themselves from string to string and up the neck. Its different for everyone but at some point it just "clicks" in our brains and your on your way.
Good luck with your learning and keep it fun no matter what.

In HS, I used to play Baritone Horn and Valve Trombone, I also took 6 years of piano lessons as a child. Haven't played any of them in over 30 years. I played 1st chair Baritone Horn all the way thru HS, but couldn't play it today if my life depended on it! It's amazing how you lose what you don't use.
In my early 20s, I took up the bass guitar (Fender) but ended up selling it after a couple of years along with my amp, mic, stand, etc. for rent money.

I was in search of a les paul custom when I finally decided to pull the trigger with Bill C. I think it was the personalizing of it that made me swing to one of his. I had him send the neck to a guy in FL that does inlay and had some stuff done. Turned out pretty trick. I had a 71' Martin d28, It was one I bought from Tut Taylors grandson. It was a odd ball brazilian wood. The guy was hurt'n for some money to supply a bad habit so I got it dirt cheap. One of the luthier guys that work for Mark Taylor ( Tut's son ) found out I had it and made me a offer I couldn't refuse. So thats how I kinda wound up somewhat trading for the Crook Tele. I liked playing the other Crafters of Tennessee acoustic more, it had a better feel to me than the martin did. You could tell it was made from some left over books of brazilian - they didn't match. But it still looked good. It would'nt bring the top retail because of the year stamped on it. but it brought enough to more than pay for the Crook. I bought a 1975 ODE mandolin from him that Tut had given him at the same time. That one I'm hanging on to. Maybe one day I'll figure out how to play it to. If you ever run across one of the " Tut Taylor Inc " dobro's for cheap, I'm looking for one. that would round out my collection.
If you've never heard of Tut Taylor you can read about him here.

Re: Any Musicians on the forum?
I'm familiar with Tut and COT guitars. In fact, I jammed with Mark and some of the family. I played several different guitars they brought with them to an acoustic Jam in Conyers, Ga. several years ago.
Do you know Doug Jones (aka Little Brother) in Conyers? He used to have a large gathering of acoustic players from his message forum at his home every fall. I think it was '04 or '05 when the COT guys were there. Very nice, high quality instruments those guys were making.
I have several acoustic guitars:
Santa Cruz - FS
Breedlove - Custom C25
Goodall - Grand Concert
Larrivee - Parlor
SS Stewart - 1928 Archtop

Re: Any Musicians on the forum?
Great thread idea there MM...........
A Mando wanna be picker here, been at it about 7 years or so and to call myself a picker would be an insult to all the true pickers out there! Started out tryin to learn Bluegrass, and have a few songs in under my belt, but the speed that the true pickers go is just amazing and I dont have the fingers that move that quick anymore....so have moved genres and do more southern rock, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd that sort of thing.
Have a good friend who does Cowboy shows at dude ranches around here, and we do a lot together. I have learned all of his songs and do back him on occasion, but the best times are out camping around the campfire! Mandolin lends itself to the woods somehow and it just seems so natural.
Anyway, enough about my pickin'
( or attempt to pick )

thats one I'd like to try.Breedlove - Custom C25
Never heard of little brother in conyers. I'm sure some of my true bluegrass friends probably have. Theres some place here in georgia that one of my friends go to that is like a retreat for big name bluegrass pickers. You have to know somebody that knows somebody to get invited to camp out on the farm.
If your ever in savanna, Ga you need to stop by Randy Woods guitar shop. There could be anybody that just happens to pass through that stops and jams in the parlor at his store, Derek Trucks was in there when I went in one time. Just hangin out and pick'n a few. A lot of other big names stop in if there traveling down I95. The local guys are usually in there every sat playing.
Randy still builds guitars there at the shop. Me - I wouldn't dare pick up a guitar while i'm in there. You better know a little something if you do that.

Flyer - I have several friends who play the Mando and one I mean can play the mando! Marshall Tucker and Skynyrd are fine by me anytime.
Phillip - Little Brother (d. jones) in Conyers is 100% Blues. No Bluegrass. He plays old time blues with the best of them. Think Robert Johnson old time blues. He has many videos on youtube under Little Brother Blues.

I play trombone in a 50 piece Wind Ensemble here in Orillia so I guess you could say that I'm an amateur musician. I've been playing with them now for about 20 years. Played in HS, then took 26 yrs off. My mother taught piano for 50 yrs so music has always been a part of my life. I grew up listening to classical music and it is still my favourite music to play but I really like all types of music. A fella that lived 2 doors from me went into the music business and has done very well. You may have heard of him. His name is Gordon Lightfoot. My mother used to teach him piano.

I don't now any famous musicians, but I did sell a suit of clothes to Red Skelton back in the 80s. Oh wait, I also bumped into Ronnie Milsap in the Denver airport back in the 80s; he didn't see me coming though.
