How far do you travel in a day?

We are looking at our first long trip ( 900 miles). Usually, we only travel a couple of hours from home so I'm not sure how many miles I should be looking at per day. Any suggestions.

Did the Winona, MN to northern VA trek twice last summer. (you may have read my reports). Going out we head for the eastern border of IN (there's a Cracker Barrel there) on the first day. Coming home we go for Champagne/Urbana (yup, another Cracker Barrel). The longest stretch time wise has been about 17 hours. I have always enjoyed driving, and while 17 hours is a long time I seem to handle it well. I like the short day getting to the destination or back home.

Oh ya, sent from my temporary home in Radcliff, KY. Longing for the day I figure out how to get 'Cat down here and into the storage lat on Ft. Knox.

Yes, Cracker Barrel does allow overnight parking. You do need to call ahead to ensure it is permitted at each one. They open at 6 am.

We did a cross country trip this past summer with our 'cat. From Baltimore MD to MOAB, UT (I70) it took us 3.5 days of driving. Once out west we hit Arches NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Canyonlands NP, Grand Canyon North Rim, Monument Valley, Mesa Verda NP, Sante Fe and several other areas. The return trip was 3 days (I40). 7200 miles overall in 23 days. Can't wait to do another cross-country camping trip (but next time I will take somewhere between 1-2 months to do it right).

I've driven approx. 650 miles one trip and 730 miles another. I don't go by miles though I use time, 12hrs is the most I like to do by myself. I love to leave early because of no traffic and wife & kids get to sleep.
