2001-2010 DURAMAX OWNERS NEW FUEL FILTER INFO.
Just in case you Duramax owners dont know it yet a new filter came out recently thats supposed to do a better job than the older AC-Deloco filter. I put one of them in mine on Jan 5th and it still showing 97% of filter life available so it does seem to last longer than my last one did.
Here is some information on it:
Information on Improved Fuel Filter for 6.6L Duramax Diesel Engine
(WD Bulletin 09D-068)
Effective May 4, 2009, an improved fuel filter (12633243/TP3012) is now released that will service all 2001-
2009 Chevrolet and GMC C/K models and 2003-2009 Chevrolet and GMC C4500/5500 series vehicles
with the 6.6 Duramax Diesel. The new coalescer filter provides the following benefits / improvements over
the existing dual pleat design.
• Significantly improved water separation with both diesel and biodiesel blended fuels to protect fuel
injectors and pumps from corrosion.
• 1.5 to 2 times the contaminant capacity depending on the type of contaminants in the fuel (longer
life/less prone to plugging problems/better performance at high altitudes).
• Particle removal efficiency that is equivalent to the current Duramax fuel filter.
• Improved resistance to cold weather plugging with diesel and biodiesel improperly blended or additized
for cold operation.
• Designed for use with all Duramax Diesels 2001-2009.
• This improved filter is currently used in O.E production.
Racor NEW Coalescer Fuel Filter 01-10 Duramax Diesel
This is the latest and greatest high efficiency, long life, "depth coalescing media" fuel filter by Racor. This is the EXACT same filter sold by GM dealerships (pn# 12633243) but at a fraction of the cost. The PFF50216 has been tested to OEM standards for life, efficiency, water removal, and is now standard and backward compatible on all GM Duramax engine applications. The Racor PFF50216 coalescing filter system inside has up to twice the life and improved water removal in all blends and types of diesel fuel when compared to other paper media filters.

Bill- Thank you for posted that information. Very useful information. Otherwise, we duramax people would have never found out.

Figured I would put out the information for those of us that didn't know about the new style filter now available. Its funny I bought a couple extra filters about a year ago, (not the the latest one) then I saw this one come out and read how much better this new one was and ordered one. So I have some throw down filters that I carry with me just in case i'll ever need them on the road.

What tells you that you still have 97% life available?
Our SD(SUPER DUTY
) filters mount on the frame under the drivers door and 1 on top of the engine. But neither one have any kind of gauge._________________

Tom, the on board computer Drivers Information Center (D.I.C.) indicates how much life is left in both the oil and fuel filter.

Hmm, that sounds like a good item to have, how accurate are they?

Tom they seem pretty accurate its part of the original equipment package that came with the vehicle. It monitors mpg, fuel used, hours on the engine, tire air pressure, oil life, fuel filter life, water in fuel, and the trans temp.

Thats a nice feature, wish us
owners had that. Or at least it would be an option on the XLT package.
Thanks for the info Bill.....

Thanks for the info bsmall.
My D.I.C is showing 40% left on my fuel filter but I'll probably go ahead and change it before our first trip next month. Its over a year old.
Truck just sits in the garage most of the time.

My filter is overdue for a change. The truck is a little over a year old and has 20k miles. I have been noticing a dip in fuel economy and am starting to wonder if a filter change would help. It looks like a pain in the butt to change though.

Re: 2001-2010 DURAMAX OWNERS NEW FUEL FILTER INFO.
Bsmall2800, do you know what parameters the drivers information center is measuring to determe the fuel filter life? I would be surprised if the system used the type or brand of filter to determine the percent life left. It could use the differential pressure measurements before and after the filter to determine if the filter is plugged but it most likely just measures the volume of fuel that has gone through or is based on the engine hours since the last reset.
I do know the oil filter life is determined by the engine revolutions and temperature. This means more cold starts and short trips will result in a shorter distance between oil changes. I'm sure your owners manual would have information about this.

Ken, I don't know the parameters it uses for calculating the % of life left in the fuel filter. Great question though, I will do a little research and find the answer, because I would like to know also.

Re: 2001-2010 DURAMAX OWNERS NEW FUEL FILTER INFO.
BayouDude. From what I've read on diesel forums not changing the fuel filter will affect your fuel mileage. They say to change the fuel filter at 15,000 miles. Lots of guys change it more frequent than that. I only have 8,000 miles on my truck but plan on changing the fuel filter every 10,000 miles. I change my oil every 5,000 miles. The computer is nice to keep an eye on things but I prefer to go by a specific schedule. You need to change the fuel filter through the passenger side fender wheel. You need to pull the fender liner loose. There is actually a fuel filter access panel that is available on E bay. You cut a small section of the fender liner out and then this piece overlays the fender liner and installs with plastic push nuts that are easily removed when you want to service the filter. If you plan on changing the filter yourself there is good information on the Duramax forum and also The Dieselplace forum. It seems the price to have a dealer change the filter is anywhere from $ 100.00 to $ 150.00

Re: 2001-2010 DURAMAX OWNERS NEW FUEL FILTER INFO.
BayouDude, you can choose to remove the fender liner but I change mine from the top and never spill a drop. I would definately not run 20k on the same filter. I don't have the DIC but on various trips to the dealer they have hooked up pressure gauge on the rail and in some instances with only a couple thousand miles the filters were not flowing properly. One dirty tank of fuel can eat up a lot of filters. Always keep a spare behind the seat. I can change it with my belt and a pocket knife.

Changed mine out this weekend.I used the wix filter from O'Reiley $45 and it took longer to fight with the damn plastic clips on the fender than it did to change the filter. I just question the GM engineer's logic in placing a fuel filter that could potentially leak right above the exhaust manifold
.

I installed one of those preformed plastic doors in the fender wheel well like was mentioned earlier. That should do the trick next time I change out my fuel filter, should take me only a few minutes to do now....
Cheers,
Cheers,
