First 2010 Trip
So, has anyone else planned their first trip of the year? Yea, yea, I know you southerners and Californians can camp the year round. For those of us in the colder climates the first trip of the year is exciting. So what plans does everyone have?? Does anyone have plans yet?
Normally our first trip of the year is to Gulf Shores, AL in March. This year we couldn’t get a spot at either of the two campgrounds we like in Gulf Shores so we had to go to Plan B, find somewhere else. Oh well, it was time to go someplace new anyway.
We now have reservations for the month of March at Bay Hide Away (www.bayhideaway.com) in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. This RV park looks pretty good on paper and seems to have everything we look for in a park with the exception of cable TV.
If anyone is passing through the area in March stop by and say hi. I’m sure we’ll be able to offer you coffee, tea, or an adult beverage.
You can't miss my truck. Look for that big bumper.

Scruffy and I are on our first trip of 2010. We have one more day at Disney's Fort Wilderness, then we head home. We figure we're going to have to re-winterize the 'Cat when we get home.

This is be best time to camp here in the south. No bugs...no heat and small crowds. We have been camping several times so far....since November. Hope everyone will have a great camping season.

M,
You're right about no heat. It's been cold here the past week. Today it is so cold our old bones are hurting. We were going to go to Hollywood Studios this morning, but decided against it. We usually have much more pleasant weather this time of year. We drove over to the Hess station a while ago and filled our tanks.
Richard,
We will be stopping at Hollywood Casino campground in Bay Saint Louis on our way home. We're going to try to drive by/through Bay Hide Away while we're there. I'll let you know how it looks. A lot of the BSL area was hit hard by hurricane Katrina, and much of it hasn't recovered yet.

We are thinking of getting out of Iowa sometime the second week of March. (have family things up until then) Our thought were maybe the Hill Country of Texas ( Fredericksburg area) or Myrtle Beach South Carolina depends on the weather on route.

Oh yes, please do. Let us know how the Hollywood Casino campground looks too. This will be the first time we've camped in an area with casinos close by....I feel added expenses coming on.

Re: First 2010 Trip
We stay at Hollywood Casino campground every trip to Florida - one or two nights driving down, one or two nights going back home. Sometimes it is our actual destination. There are no activities there - except the casino. People in the RV park can use the hotel pool.
I'll look up some photos and see if any of them show enough of the campground to get an idea of how it looks.

Re: First 2010 Trip
The first big trip is to Florida the first week of April for a wedding, but we are going this coming weekend
.
We are working on a trip the first 2 weeks of June up to Long Island. I am trying to incorporate Maine into the trip. I called and talked to the Ferry and I can bring the Cat on and it will cost $2.53 per foot during the week or $3.07 on the weekend. Any body have any idea what tolls would cost if I decided to try and pull this thing through New York to get to the island?

Re: First 2010 Trip
We started planning our spring break and summer trips last weekend. I was amazed at how much the campgrounds are filling up already. We usually go to Land-Between-The-Lakes in Kentucky for a week in July. But all the good sites are taken already. There are many "decent" sites at all the campgrounds that are "first-come-first-serve", but its just too far to travel to chance not getting a site upon arrival.
Last week in March is spring break and will be our first trip. Going to Hart State Park on Lake Hartwell.

Which park do you stay at in Gulf Shores? We prefer Island Retreat RV Park but Gulf State park looks fantastic since it was rebuilt.

Re: First 2010 Trip
Richard,
We stay at Gulf State Park. We started camping there a couple years before the hurricane and almost every year since. I agree with you, they've done a great job rebuilding the park. We keep this trip simple, run over to Joe Patti's Seafood in Pensacola & get enough fish to grill for the week, and then hang out at any of the beaches from Pensacola west to Gulf Shores.
Someone always has a birthday during the week there, so then we head in to LuLu's.
How do you like Island Retreat?

Re: First 2010 Trip
RichGeorge, since we stay a month at a time we prefer Island Retreat for the Cable TV hookup and free WiFi. It doesn't have the feel of a campground, but it's a great RV park. Normally we're down there in March and we really enjoy the company of the snowbirds. Most of the snowbirds at Island Retreat leave at the end of March.
We love going to LuLu's for lunches. The wait to be seated for dinner can be too long for our liking.

OK, don't look for the Red Dodge truck if you look for us in Bay Hide Away RV park in Bay St. Louis, MS. We now have a Grey colored Ford Crew Cab. You can see a picture of it in the Tow Vehicles Forum. Don't forget, everyone and anyone is invited to stop by for a beverage and chat if you're passing through that area during the month of March. We'd love to meet some of our fellow Wildcat owners.

Re: First 2010 Trip
We have some large trips planned for this year but we can't come out of hibernation here till about April. We'll just go to a state park for 2-3 days then. Have to watch the weather first.
