Slide out Belly Storage

Post by dragynj on 1/23/2010, 11:30 am

Hey all!

Sorry, this is more of a question than an actual project that I've completed. I am wondering if anyone has ever thought to "mod" their basement storage. I am thinking about adding a couple large/heavy duty drawer slides in the basement. My goal is to create a shelf that slides out making our gear more accessible. I know this isn't earth shattering stuff, I've seen it in some high end RV's, but never in a WC.

Looking to spark a discussion. Thanks!!

Good idea; something similar to the slider used in pick up beds. Now you got me thinking! So far, I have just gone the cheap route and used those plastic boxes from WalMart that have wheels on one end. The only problem with the slider is it could not be any bigger than the compartment door; I would still have a lot of stuff stored off to the side.

This or something similar would be what you would want for the slides. I've thought about it but like Scottz said a lot of wasted space to the sides.

Or something like this. Have to take some measurements (once I can get enough snow cleared to see the cat).

Sweet! That Bed slide looks good but maybe to big? 48" is about the longest drawer slide I could find as well. And, as stated, could result in some wasted space on the sides and in the middle of the RV (if you put a slide on both sides of the basement).

Thanks for the input guys, got me thinking. Now, if only it was warm enough to get working on some of my hair brained idears!!! :)

I was thinking about the same thing ,but I was thinking of putting my out door cooking stuff on it. Maybe build a cover over it so do not loose so much storage space

Our Outback TT had what we called a "morgue drawer" in the front pass thru storage. It was all plastic and about 10 inches deep, 7 feet long, and you could slide it out to either side.

It was a nice thought from the mfg., but I found it wasted a lot of space because there was minimal clearance in front and behind, so if you had stuff that didn't fit into the drawer itself, you were looking for another place to put it.

I took it out after a year, and still have the drawer leaning in the corner of my shed......

I've often thought about installing slides in the basement. Maybe one for each side, or one long one from the curb side. My problem has always be height. There is just enough height for a good sized storage chest or footlocker with minimal ceiling clearance. If I put the slides in, I think I'd lose that clearance (height of slide + 3/4" panel for slide itself. Probably looking at at least 1-1/2" loss. With all the stuff we carry as full-timers that we pack into our storage bins, I'm not sure I can sacrafice the height.

Why not install one on the underside of the trailer mounted to the frame rails. I seem to have more than enough ground clearance with the 16" wheels to mount a 10-12" deep slide without modding the factory pass through.

I have been trying to come up with a solution for mounting my batteries (extra for inverter) to the underside of the trailer. I wanted to get to an area between the axles so the weight would be right above the axles. Still trying to come up with a solution though. I will post pics if I come up with something.

Lippert makes a type of drawer unit that attachs to the frame for storage.
